Yellow-rumped Warblers, Setophaga coronata, are migratory birds that nest and raise their young in Canada before coming south to the United States and Mexico during the colder Winter months.

They eat insects, seeds, and wild fruit and berries. You may attract them to your yard by offering sunflower seeds, raisins, and suet.

Eastern Bluebirds, Sialia sialis, are widespread over the eastern half of the United States and parts of Mexico. Insects are a large part of their diet, but they rely on wild fruits and berries for food in the Winter.

They are cavity nesting birds, using either natural holes in dead trees or man-made nest boxes.

The Red-breasted Nuthatch, Sitta canadensis, is a migratory songbird of North America. In the Summer they breed all across Canada and in the mountainous areas of the United States.

And in the Winter they come south! I am very happy to see them at my feeders.

As we were driving home from a friend's house late in the afternoon, a Barred Owl, Strix varia, flew across the road in front of us and lit in a nearby tree. I made several photos, admiring the beautiful pattern of feathers on its back and tail.

And then, it swiveled its head around to stare at me over its shoulder!

Barred Owls are birds of prey that usually hunt at night, catching and eating small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates.

R is for Raptors - birds that kill and eat small mammals, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, and other birds

There are three main physical characteristics of Raptors:
1. a hooked beak with rough edges
2. strong legs and feet with sharp, curved claws
3. keen eyesight

Just a few examples of Raptors are Hawks, Eagles, Owls, and Ospreys. But this one looks so cute, it is hard to believe it is a fierce hunter and killer!

The Question Mark Butterfly, Polygonia interrogationis, gets its name from the small white marks on the underside of its wings. It can be found in the eastern and central parts of the United States and in southern Canada.

I got only a brief glimpse of the upper side of its wings before it flew away.

You may see Pied-billed Grebes, Podilymbus podiceps, on lakes and ponds across much of North America. Short, chunky birds, they are expert at swimming and diving, but awkward on land. They eat small fish, crustaceans, and insects. In some parts of their range they add small reptiles and amphibians to their diet.

Great Egrets, Ardea alba, breed across much of the United States before migrating to their Winter homes along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, the Gulf of Mexico and southward into Mexico and the Central American countries. Look for them in shallow water, moving slowly or standing perfectly still, stalking fish. In addition to fish, they eat insects, crustaceans, small reptiles, and amphibians.

Melanerpes carolinus, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, get their name from a small red spot on their bellies that is barely visible. They are common in the eastern half of the United States where they nest in cavities of dead trees. If no dead trees are available, they may drill out holes in live trees or telephone poles. They eat insects, nuts, seeds, and fruit. You can attract them to your yard by hanging suet feeders.

The American Crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos, is a common bird across most of the United States and Canada, but they are rarely seen in Mexico. They are social birds with strong family ties. The young birds stay with their parents for several years to help raise the next years' nestlings.

They eat a wide variety of food: seeds, fruit, berries, insects, earthworms, mice, and small fish.

H is for Hummingbirds: the smallest birds in the world (weight 2 to 20 grams, less than an ounce)

Hummingbirds get their name from the humming sound of their rapid wingbeats (more than 70 beats per second). They are found only in the Americas - 17 species in the United States, 5 species in Canada, and over 300 species in Central and South America. Many Hummingbirds are migratory, flying hundreds of miles each year.

In many species the male Hummingbirds have iridescent throat feathers that look dull until the light strikes them at the proper angle.

Hummingbirds sip nectar from flowers and eat tiny insects. Many people hang Hummingbird feeders filled with sugar-water to attract them to their gardens. Here in north Mississippi, the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds usually arrive at the end of March to nest and raise their young. By the first of October they are on their journey south to spend the Winter in Central America.

Green Herons, Butorides virescens, are small Herons that may be seen wading in shallow water in search of small fish. They often keep their long necks folded down close to their bodies, but when prey is spotted, they extend their necks and strike with lightening speed. They get their name from the greenish feathers on their back and crown.

Eastern Kingbirds, Tyrannus tyrannus, are migratory birds whose breeding range covers most of North America. They spend the Winter months in South America. Members of the flycatcher family of birds, they eat insects and fruit. The white-tipped tail is a key to identification.

(Their cousins, the Western Kingbirds, Tyrannus verticalis, claim the western half of the United States as their breeding territory).
