Saturday's Critters and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, March 27, 2022
Last year a pair of Ospreys raised two chicks on this nesting platform out in Pickwick Lake.

But look who is nesting there this year...

... a Canada Goose!
Fortunately, baby Geese can swim the day after hatching, but that is a long way down to the water!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Canada Geese, February 27, 2022

Pickwick Lake, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, February 6, 2022
Canada Geese, Branta canadensis. There are so many small birds that flit around too fast to identify that I am happy to find large, easy-to-identify birds that stand still for a photo!

Have a blessed day!

Amazing to see just a few steps outside my kitchen door, a White-tailed Deer eating the sunflower seeds we put out for the Mourning Doves!

Just one more photo before she saw me, and then she was gone back to the woods.

And now for some birds.

The Blue-fronted Dancer, Argia apicalis, is a small Damselfly about an inch and a half long, Actually, I was trying to photograph raindrops when I found it!

5. Canada Geese (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, July 2, 2020

1. Wide Open Spaces (Sky Watch Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 27, 2020
Some days I have to just get out of the house and drive around a bit to make sure the world is still out there! I stopped my car on a bridge (there was no traffic) to get this photo. It had rained earlier in the day.

2. Butterfly Weed (Wildflower Wednesday)
The 4th Wednesday of each month is Wildflower Wednesday. (It was the 27th this month).
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 28, 2020
Butterfly Weed, Ascepias tuberosa, is the prettiest 'weed' you will ever see! It lives up to its name attracting butterflies, and it is a host plant for the Monarch Butterfly.

3. Garden Update
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 28, 2020
My friend Jan gave me these tomato and pepper plants. The pepper plants had no label on them, and she grew the tomato plants from the seeds of a store-bought tomato. So now I have a bit of mystery in my garden, no-name tomatoes and no-name peppers!

4. Butterfly (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 28, 2020
American Lady Butterfly, Vanessa virginiensis, on Butterfly Bush, Buddleia.

1. Sunny Skies! (Sky Watch Friday)
Shiloh National Military Park, Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, April 18, 2020
Though Saturday was a beautiful sunny day, there were very few people taking the self-guided driving tour of the park. All the buildings in the park are closed, and the parking lot is closed off so that people cannot gather there. We had our masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer with us, and followed the social distancing guidelines when we stopped briefly at the Eagle's nesting area.

And far overhead, our National Bird, the Bald Eagle, soars! (almost a Haiku verse)

2. My Vegetable Garden
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 22, 2020
Our weather has been warm, then cold, then warm again so often that it's hard to know when to set out the tomatoes! I bought these three (two Better Boys and a Sweet 100) and kept them in the house during the coldest nights, but decided Wednesday it was time to plant them. (There were four, but one died).

I planted them deep, covering up at least half the plant. Since I am not able to dig in the ground, I am growing them in large flower pots. I chose red pots in case there is any truth to the old wives' tale that the red color will encourage them to make more tomatoes!

3. Clematis (The Weekend in Black and White)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 20, 2020
double white Clematis

4. Favorite Photo of the Week (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 20, 2020
I never thought of Geese as aristocrats, but doesn't this one have a very superior look on its face?
Canada Goose, Branta canadensis.

5. European Starling (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 20, 2020
Yes, I know, Starlings are an invasive species that are problematic in some areas, but I always think of the book "Arnie, the Darling Starling" by Margarete Sigl Corbo whenever I see a Starling!
European Starling, Sturnus vulgaris.

Hope you are having a good week!
