Great Blue Herons, July 2, 2016

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, I'd Rather B Birdin', and Saturday's Silhouettes

Our birding trip to Pickwick was rained out on Monday, so we went again on Wednesday.
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, June 29, 2016
The Herons were very active, swooping around and splashing down to grab fish for their lunch.

That's a keeper!

And down it goes!

If you visit my blog often, you already know that the Great Blue Herons are my favorite birds (until the Hummingbirds return in the Spring!).

I set my camera for continuous shooting whenever I am photographing birds. I get a lot of duplicate photos, but occasionally I get an action series like this.

.

I think this is a female Great Blue Heron; the males are already putting on their breeding plumage.

I had noticed this well-kept farm before, but we were always in a hurry to get somewhere. Then this past Monday we had extra time and no traffic on the road, so I was able to stop and get a photo.

There are several donkeys in the pasture with the cows to raise the alarm if coyotes come near. I have no personal experience with donkeys, but people say donkeys bray loud enough to scare predators away, and will kick like the devil if they get within range.

After eating Thanksgiving lunch with our cousins, we drove over to Pickwick to see if the Gulls and Herons were there.

When water is being released through the spillways, the Gulls and Herons have a wonderful time fishing.

Most of the gulls we see are Ring-Billed Gulls, but there are other kinds here, too.

Anole, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 8, 2015

I was checking the progress of the buds on my Night Blooming Cactus when I discovered this little green lizard (properly known as an Anole). There are many species of Anoles worldwide. They are generally considered beneficial to the garden as they eat insects. I'm hoping he doesn't try to hitchhike his way into the house when I move the plants indoors.

We saw this hawk perched in a dead tree beside the highway. We pulled over to the shoulder of the road, and my husband made this photo through the sun roof of our car.

Spiny Orb Weaver Spider, Lee County, Mississippi, USA, September 15, 2015

Hiking a nature trail on the Natchez Trace Parkway, I almost walked into this spider's web. Luckily the spider was at head-height, and I saw it just in time. It is hanging upside down - those spots that look like eyes are just spots on its back.

Although Spiny Orb Weaver Spiders look fierce, they are non-aggressive and non-poisonous.

I was amazed to see this one lean so far forward without losing its balance!

They have an amazing ability to adjust their buoyancy, and can sink down until only their heads are above the water.

This bird flew as soon as I stopped the car beside the road.  This one quick photo was all I could get.   Since the bright sky background caused this to be a silhouette, I am not sure of the feather's true colors. When I first saw it, I thought it was a hawk, but now I don't think so. Anyone have an idea?

Squirrels, Birds, and Bridges, July 18, 2015

Camera Critters and Saturday's Critters

 City Park, Booneville, Mississippi, USA

The most common squirrel here is the Grey Squirrel.  This one didn't want to yield the walking track to me!  I was able to get really close before it scampered off.

This Grey Squirrel has a genetic variation that scientists refer to as a color morph.  The Brown Morph causes its tail to be brown instead of grey.

I love to watch the Herons.  They are so elegant and graceful.

Though I must admit this one looks a bit awkward coming in for a landing!

It was alert, but not frightened, as I walked by.

Vultures for Saturday Silhouettes, June 27, 2015

Turkey Vultures, Prentiss county, Mississippi, USA, June 8, 2015

Two vultures got into a dispute over who gets to sit at the very top of a dead tree. The third vulture looks like he is about to fly away and leave them to it.

I don't usually post twice on the same day, but Nick has a brand new meme, Saturday Silhouettes, and I wanted to get in on the ground floor, so to speak.
