Thankful Thursday, January 30, 2020

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 27, 2020
I am thankful for early signs of Spring like these tiny Spirea blooms! We have had a mild Winter with only a few periods of below freezing temperatures, causing this flowering shrub to bud and bloom earlier than usual. When Spring actually gets here, blooms will completely cover all the branches.

Have a blessed day!

Pied-billed Grebes, Podilymbus podiceps, are common across much of North America. Those that breed in Canada in the Summer migrate south in the cold weather months, but many birds stay in the same territory all year. (Bright sunlight caused the water in this small pond to appear yellowish to my camera).

1. Sunny, but Cold (Sky Watch Friday)
Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, January 19, 2020
We have had so much rain that when we got a sunny day, off we went to eat at Hagy's Catfish Hotel on the Tennessee River. We like to get a table by the windows so we can watch the river traffic.

I am thankful to live in the southern US where signs of Spring come early! But I am not forgetting that we sometimes have snow and ice in February.

This photo was made last Saturday. Since then our temperatures have been dropping below freezing at night. I do not expect to see any more blooms for awhile!

1. Rain (Sky Watch Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 16, 2020
We have had so much rain that this small lake is already running over its banks, and there is more rain in the forecast this weekend. A few weeks ago the highway department put in a culvert to divert the overflow away from the road.

I am not sure what that pipe is, but with all this rain we can pretend it is a submarine's periscope! lol

2. Good Food!

3. Fresh Coffee (Signs 2)
Pontotoc, Mississippi, USA, January 16, 2020
Have you seen signs for these coffee makers at convenience store/gas stations? The top part of the coffee maker holds coffee beans. A touch screen lets you choose cup size, type of grind, and whether or not you want it to leave space for cream. It only takes an extra minute for it to grind the coffee beans before pouring the coffee into the cup. The idea of fresh ground coffee beans sounds good, but honestly, I could not tell a difference in the taste. I guess the biggest convenience here is that the store employees do not have to keep making fresh pots of coffee all day!

4. Sheep (Saturday's Critters)

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day and My Corner of the World

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

Hellebores are very reliable for Wintertime blooms!

I don't know the exact name of the ones I have, but I believe my mother-in-law started with just one plant. Over the years they multiplied, and I inherited them when she died.
