Melanerpes carolinus, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, get their name from a small red spot on their bellies that is barely visible. They are common in the eastern half of the United States where they nest in cavities of dead trees. If no dead trees are available, they may drill out holes in live trees or telephone poles. They eat insects, nuts, seeds, and fruit. You can attract them to your yard by hanging suet feeders.
Have a wonderful day!
