Our dog, Harry Kane, continues to entertain and surprise us. When he saw a large dead tree laying on the ground, he climbed up and sat down to pose for a photo!

A New Dog

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 13, 2023

After our old dog died two months ago, we needed another dog, and this dog needed a home. We don't know anything about his parents or what breed he might be. Our veterinarian thinks he is only about a year old, so he may grow bigger. He already weights 60 lbs! We take him (or he takes us) for long walks in our woods - good exercise for everyone.

He loves to run really fast; he is like a small hurricane. So we named him Harry Kane!

My Hibiscus mutabilis 'Confederate Rose' is late blooming this year. Thankfully, it is growing underneath the trees so it has some protection from colder weather. But it will soon be dormant until Spring.

Bluebird houses have greatly improved the Eastern Bluebirds chances of survival. The entrance hole is small so that larger birds cannot get in, and no perch is needed for the Bluebirds. I built this one from a kit.

At Olive Garden: Zoodles! Spiralized Zucchini, with other vegetables and grilled chicken in a creamy sauce. It was very good! And I am glad we went there before the 'shut down the restaurants' order came. They have relaxed the rules a little bit now to allow carry-out (to-go) food.

Common Grackles, Quiscalus quiscula, live in the eastern half of the continent. The northernmost birds come south to spend the Winter and return to Canada in the Spring.

We have had rain all week so I went back to last Friday to find a sunny sky photo. But looking at the weather forecast early this morning, we have a promise of sunshine and 46F (8C) today (Friday).

2. Good Food! (Signs 2)

Olive Garden Italian Restaurant is one of my favorite restaurants. I like their All-You-Can-Eat Lunch Special of Soup, Salad, and Garlic Bread.

But when we were there last Sunday I ordered their Eggplant Parmigiana. There is a choice of soup or salad. The salad is brought to the table in a large bowl accompanied by garlic bread and individual salad plates for each person to help himself to as much salad as he wants.

Then comes the entrée! Eggplant Parmigiana is sliced eggplant lightly breaded and fried, topped with marinara sauce and melted mozzarella cheese, with a side order of Spaghetti. Absolutely delicious!

1. A Sunny Day! (Sky Watch Friday)

We have had a long string of rainy days, so when Sunday dawned bright and clear we had to get out and go somewhere! We drove up to Pickwick Dam on the Tennessee River to check the water levels and look for birds. Only a few of the spillways were closed; most of them were open to relieve the high water upriver.

There were a few Great Blue Herons fishing in the turbulent water, and we saw a flock of Coots on the other side of the dam.

Great Blue Heron: living life on the edge!
If you look closely, you can see that one of the heron's toes is exactly even with the end of the tree limb.

3. Growing Lettuce in the Winter!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 8, 2019

I sowed lettuce seeds in large tubs in September. I did it as an experiment to see how long I could keep them alive during the Winter. I cover them at night when our temperatures are below freezing.

We have had days of milder temperatures with plenty of rain. It encouraged the lettuce to produce enough new leaves for us to have salads earlier this week.

4. Possum in a Pear Tree! (Saturday's Critters)

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 8, 2019

When we went outside early Tuesday morning to see why our dog was barking, we found an opossum in a tree just outside our back door!

Our dog settled down after she got our attention, but she was still keeping a close eye on it. We told her what a good girl she was, and petted her, and praised her. We let her keep it treed for about an hour, then we tied her in the front yard so that the opossum could escape back to the woods.

In September I sowed lettuce seeds in large plastic tubs. Since our nighttime temperatures began to drop below freezing, I have covered them each night. Now I am picking home-grown lettuce - in November!

The Tupelo-Lee County Humane Society recently moved into their new building.

It includes a clinic where the animals can be spayed or neutered before they are adopted.

Because of the mottled brown and white feathers on its back and its dark beak, I think this is a juvenile Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus.

The young Bald Eagles do not have the white head and tail feathers of the adults until they are about five years old.

We have had several blustery, rainy days this week. When I was at the lake at Ballard Park yesterday, strong winds were pushing the water towards the north shore (towards me). I snapped a few photos and was glad to get back into my car!

Oxalis are wide-spread around the world, and there are hundreds of different kinds. The ones
I have are perennials with tiny white flowers, but other Oxalis varieties may have pink, red, or yellow blooms.

The Strawberry Walnut Chicken Salad at Legends Steakhouse with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing and toasted bread. It was delicious!

4. A Friend's Dog (Saturday's Critters)

Lauderdale County, Alabama, USA, March 21, 2018

Our friend's little dog chewed up the small balls they were using to teach him to fetch, so they gave him a basketball. He loves it!

He chases it around all over their yard, using his head, chest, and front legs to roll it along at an amazing speed. Most of the photos I made are just a blur as he went running by with it!

Then he rolls it back, asking for it to be thrown or kicked again. And the most amazing thing was that he rolled it back to a different person each time so we all had a turn. It was great fun!
