Pickwick Lake in the Fog, December 31, 2021

Sky Watch Friday and The Weekend in Black and White
and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, December 26, 2021
We have had unseasonably warm weather this week with a lot of fog, and on Wednesday we had two and a half inches (6 cm) of rain. (I just noticed I made this photo with the nesting platform pole out in the lake directly behind the little tree).

The bird on the Osprey nesting platform out in the lake is a Great Blue Heron.

A view of Pickwick Lake in the fog for The Weekend in Black and White.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Happy New Year!

I am linking in today with Skywatch Friday and The Weekend in Black and White

1. Foggy Morning Sunrise (Sky Watch Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 2, 2020

The one day I was up and on the road early enough to get a sunrise photo, it was completely foggy!
(My house is surrounded by trees, so I am not able to get sunrise or sunset photos from home).

2. Spider Web (The Weekend in Black and White)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 2, 2020

But that same fog gave me a good background for this black and white photo!

3. Surprise Lilies (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 2, 2020

Surprise Lilies, Lycoris squamigera, are also called Magic Lilies and Naked Ladies.

4. Spider (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 2, 2020

Black and Yellow Garden Spiders, Argiope aurantia, are harmless to people and eat insects, making them beneficial to the garden.

5. Eastern Bluebird (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentis County, Mississippi, USA, August 3, 2020

I accidently scared this female Eastern Bluebird off her nest, and she watched me carefully as I walked by.

Have a blessed day!

1. Foggy Morning (Sky Watch Friday)
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, October 9, 2019
Though the roads were soon clear, the fog lingered across the fields and pastures until mid-morning.

2. Good Food!
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, October 13, 2019
At O'Charley's Restaurant: Santa Fe Tilapia on a bed of seasoned rice, topped with pico de gallo, and served with steamed broccoli. Very pretty and delicious, too!

3. What I am Reading
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 17, 2019
"Heart of Barkness" by Spencer Quinn is a detective story/ murder mystery written from a dog's point of view - very interesting and fun to read!

4. Turtles (Saturday's Critter's and Weekend Reflections)
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, October 9, 2019
One photo..

.. another photo, and then they were gone!

5. Mockingbird (I'd Rather B Birdin')

1. Groundhog Day (Sky Watch Friday)
Ballard Park, Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, February 2, 2019
According to folklore if there is enough sun for a Groundhog to see its shadow on February 2, there will be six more weeks of Winter weather. If there is any truth in it, well... you can see what a nice sunny day it was!

.

It was very enjoyable to just sit in the sun and watch the children play.

And the skateboarders were enjoying the ramps and the paved walkways.

We are back to our normal Winter weather this morning (Friday), 31F with an expected high of 40F (4C) with a cold wind blowing.

2. Good Food!
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, January 26, 2019
At Outback Steakhouse: Sweet Chook O' Mine Sandwich (grilled chicken with shredded lettuce, bacon, and cheese) with Aussie Fries. Delicious!

3. Favorite Photo of the Week
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, February 5, 2019
When we met friends for lunch at the Pickwick Inn on Tuesday, the sun was just beginning to break through the fog. In the Summer when the lake water is deeper, the yellow marker floats to outline a  swimming area.

4. Muscovy Ducks (Saturday's Critters)
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, February 2, 2019
Muscovy Ducks have beautiful feathers. It is kind of sad that their faces are so ugly.

.

5. Rufous-sided Towhee (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 31, 2019
I always carry my camera with me because you never know where you might see a bird. I found this male Rufous-sided Towhee, Pipilo erythrophthalmus, perched on an old junked car.

When he saw I had a camera, he tried to hide in the bushes!

Have a wonderful day!

B&W: Trees in the Fog, January 26, 2019

Lee County, Mississippi, USA, December 11, 2018
The fog was so dense that this was almost just black and white in the original photo. The only color was the garbage bin at the base of the tree (it was blue).

(Click on the photo to see it at its best)

1. Early Morning Fog (Sky Watch Friday)
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, August 26, 2018
We decided to go out for breakfast early on Sunday morning. It was very refreshing to be out at daybreak while most people were still sleeping!

There is an old bit of weather lore that says 'Fog in August, snow in December.' You may live where there is always snow in December, but here in the south, we may go several years without any snow at all. I will let you know if the predicted snow comes our way!

2. American Goldfinch (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 11, 2018
Many song birds are beginning to molt, making them look at bit scruffy.

3. The Last of the Tomatoes
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 24, 2018
For about six weeks we have been enjoying tomato sandwiches every day - a good yield from only four tomato plants! But now, it is time to let the tomato worms have the rest. Did you know that tomato worms are the caterpillar stage of Sphinx Moths?

For more information on Sphinx Moths: Sphinx Moths, the Stars of the Evening

4. Cicada (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 19, 2018
Possibly the ugliest critter you will ever see! A cicada just emerged from its shell

5. Stonecrop (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 28, 2018
'Munstead Red' Stonecrop, Sedum telephium, is a late-Summer blooming perennial that grows in full sun or part-shade. Though this one is more pink than the red shown on the plant tag, I think it is a beautiful color, and I am pleased to have it in my garden!

Willy Nilly Friday 5 and Sky Watch Friday

1. Pickwick Lake (Sky Watch Friday)
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, November 6, 2017
We have had heavy fog that lasts into the afternoon several days this week. This is the view of Pickwick Lake when we were there on Monday eating lunch with friends at the Pickwick Inn Restaurant.

2. Autumn Color
Colbert County, Alabama, USA, November 3, 2017
Cloudy days did not interfere with our enjoyment of the colorful leaves last week.

3. The Most Unusual Thing This Week
Booneville, Mississippi, USA, November 8, 2017
Did you notice the radio dial? 91.9 WOWL and 95.3 WADI are local radio stations.

4. Wildlife
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, November 9, 2017
I noticed movement at the edge of a small lake, zoomed in, and discovered this female Mallard Duck, Anas platyrhynchos, in the shadows.

5. Veterans Day is November 11
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, November 9, 2017
This replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall (Washington, DC) was dedicated at Veterans Park in Tupelo last Saturday. The names of every American soldier killed in the war are written on the Wall. It is 60% the size of the original.

Great Blue Herons, January 6, 2017

Sky Watch Friday and Weekend Reflections
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, January 1, 2017
Dense fog on New Year's Day almost obscured this Great Blue Heron.

I had seen Herons at this pond before, so I looked carefully. And there he was - very handsome in his breeding plumage!

And for Weekend Reflections
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, January 5, 2017
The same pond, but on a different day. I think this is a different Great Blue Heron, too.

Have a beautiful day!

Sky Watch Friday, December 16, 2016

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, December 13, 2016
Here they come with their landing gear down! This small flock of Canada Geese easily navigated their way through the fog to land on the neighbor's pond.

Sky Watch Friday, January 22, 2016

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 20, 2016

The first of the week was sunny and very cold. Thankfully, when the clouds rolled in mid-week the temperature rose a few degrees so that we had fog and rain instead of sleet and snow. Though this may look like early morning fog, it was at mid-afternoon. The weather forecast for today (Friday) is rain mixed with snow.

Hope the weather is good where you are!

Sky Watch Friday, December 4, 2015

We had fog and rain at the beginning of the week. When I went to the mailbox on Monday, I saw these Vultures and hurried back to the house to get my camera.

Our forecast for the week-end: Near freezing temperatures at night with sunny days and high temperatures in the 50s F (10C).
