Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, May 2016

Northeast Mississippi, USA, zone 7
The blooms on this Running Rose are small, but there are hundreds of them!

This rose hangs its head down, so I have to lift the blooms to see them.

This is an old-fashioned rose called Burr Rose. Some of the leaves you see here are from a Wisteria Vine that is trying to take over. I must get in there and cut it down.

I think this is the prettiest of my Clematis vines. Shh! Don't tell the others!

This Coreopsis came from a packet of mixed seeds.

This Geranium is a new purchase. I like to have them in hanging baskets on my porch, but I don't have much luck trying to keep them through the Winter.

A few Pansies are still blooming.

A hopeful preview of things to come! I have planted Sunflower seeds!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, December 2013

Northeast Mississippi, USA, Zone 7

It is not easy to bloom in freezing weather, but my Pansies are putting forth their best efforts.

Blooms are smaller than usual
Heads are bowed down against the cold wind.
They just need a little warmth to open
Straight Out of the Camera, December 13, 2013
Today's weather forecast: Sunny 42F. Tonight: Clear skies, frost 29F.

A Frozen Bloom Day, November 15, 2013

Here in the northeastern corner of Mississippi, we have had two nights of below freezing temperatures. It was 27F on Tuesday night and 26F on Wednesday night.
These photos were made yesterday (Thursday morning).

Butterflyweed
The Butterflyweed, Asclepias tuberosa, produced an amazing number of seeds in late Summer.
I am hoping to have a lot more plants next year, though I think it will take several years for them
to be old enough to bloom.

French Marigold, beautiful even with deadly frost
The Marigolds have been steady bloomers for months.
I will certainly plant them again in the Spring.

Pansies
Pansies are hardy here in the middle of Zone 7. You can expect to see their smiling faces for the December Bloom Day (unless they are covered with snow).

'Little Marvel' Peas
The seed packet says these garden peas are hardy to 20F. The weather forecast for the next few weeks is for milder temperatures, so maybe I will get a harvest.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day April 2013

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA, zone 7

The Hellebores are still holding on to their blooms, though their colors are beginning to fade.
They began blooming in January, very pale, with deeper colors in February and March.

Kerria Japonica 'Pleniflora'
Kerria is a bright, cheerful shrub whose ambition is to take over the entire garden

Red Buckeye Aesculus pavia
I've heard it said that when the Red Buckeye blooms, its time for the Hummingbirds to return.
Our first Hummingbird this year showed up on Saturday!
I do believe the same ones return each year, after wintering in Mexico.

Japanese Magnolia sometimes called Saucer Magnolia or Tulip Magnolia
There are very few blooms on the Japanese Magnolia this year.
We had a hard freeze with heavy frost just as it began to bud.
.
Everything here is covered with pollen from the Pine Trees.
Even the Pansies have pine pollen on their faces.

Viola sororia
The back yard is full of small Wild Violets that are kin to Pansies, both being Violas.

Claytonia virginica
Another wildflower, Spring Beauty, is running down the slope to the barn.

Their dainty little blooms are about the size of your thumbnail.

Preview of next month's Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day.

This white Clematis is the first to bud and bloom each year.
My darker colored Clematis vines are several weeks behind this one.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day March 2013

What's blooming in Mississippi, USA, zone 7
We are blessed to live in an area where Pansies bloom throughout the Winter months.
I bought twelve plants, already blooming, on October 31,
and they will continue to bloom until the weather gets too hot for them.

February is peak bloom time for the Daffodils at my house,
but I have a few late-season Daffodils that are just now opening their buds.

I forget about the Hyacinths for most of the year.

Then suddenly there they are with their wonderful aroma.

Muscari, Grape Hyacinths
These are very small and easy to overlook.
I am thinking about moving them all to one flower bed for an en masse planting.

Leucojum, Snowflakes, are sometimes confused with Snowdrops, Galanthus.
One way to tell the difference is to remember that Snowflakes have several blooms per stem;
whereas, each Snowdrop bloom has its own stem.

These Hellebores are sometimes called Lenten Roses because they bloom during Lent.

If you see a yellow shrub at someone's home, it is probably Forsythia.
I let mine grow naturally, but they can be pruned into square or round shapes.

These Spirea blooms are tiny, but there are thousands of them.
When all the buds open the shrub looks like a big white ball.

The Ornamental Pear buds are just beginning to open.
They are small, so I zoomed in to show more detail.

Hope you are having a beautiful day!

Scavenger Hunt January 27, 2013

The Scavenger Hunt prompts this week are: Lace, Bling, Wood, Fuzzy, and Fabric.

Lace:

The only Lace I could find around here was a shoe lace.
Very boring - so I asked the cat for help.
She thought it was boring, too! Oh, well....

Bling:

A pretty Watering Globe will add Bling to your flower gardens!
Fill with water, push it into the ground, and the water goes right to the roots.

Wood:

Old barn, Itawamba county, Mississippi, USA

Fuzzy:
Fuzzy seedhead from my Archives: November 9, 2012

Fabric:

My husband's grandmother made this quilted wall-hanging for us 30 years ago.
It brightens my kitchen and holds wonderful memories of her.
The pattern is The Drunkard's Path!

Have a wonderful Sunday!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day November 2012

What's blooming in Mississippi, USA, zone 7

Pansies are the stars of the November garden.

Monday night we had our first frost. The pansies just shrugged and kept on blooming!

Though not as showy as the Pansy, Oxalis brightens a shady corner.

Most of the Lantana blooms are gone. These few are in a more sheltered spot.

Best of all, my Thanksgiving Cactus is beginning to bloom in the kitchen!
