Fig Trees

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 23, 2023
I am thankful to see a few green leaves on several of my fig trees! I lost three flowering shrubs to extremely cold weather last December, and I was afraid the fig trees were dead, too. It is late for them to be just now leafing out. We may not get figs this year, but at least some of my fig trees survived!

Have a blessed day!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day

The 15th of each month is Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day over at May Dreams Gardens.

I am in the northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b.

A wildflower, Spiderwort, blooming in the rain. The other photos were made before the rain began.

Another wildflower, Butterweed, likes moist soil, and we have had plenty of rain this Spring!

Wild Violets

Most of my Daffodils bloomed last month, but there are still a few of these that make two blooms per stem.

 Hellebores

Red Buckeyes are shrubs that attract Hummingbirds.

Clematis

In memory of the time when Foliage Follow-up was the day after Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day: the leaf of a Tulip Poplar Tree waiting to unfurl.

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

Autumn Leaves, October 12, 2022

Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, October 9, 2022
Here in the mid-south region of the United States, we are enjoying the colorful leaves of Autumn. We have had sunny skies all week, except for rain on Wednesday afternoon.

Have a wonderful day!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, November 2021

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

The 15th of each month is Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

Click on the photos to see them at their best.

The 'Autumn Royalty' Azalea continues to bloom profusely.

The Lantanas at the south end of the house are enjoying the warmth of the sunshine and ignoring the cool nights. Our daytime temperatures have been about 65F and the nights around 35F (18C and 2C).

I have been thinking that each bud that opens on the 'Iceberg' Rose is the last one, but here is one more!

The Oxalis is blooming under the shelter of the porch.

And the trees are showing off their Autumn color! This Linden Tree (aka Basswood) is beside my driveway.

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, November 16, 2020

I am thankful for beautiful blue skies!

Only a few leaves are left on most of the trees,...

... so I am doubly thankful for evergreen trees like this Pine!

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, December 18, 2019
I am thankful we have propane gas heat, and though I love a fireplace, I am glad those wood-cutting days are behind us!

I am thankful for nature's beauty. Amazing how a bit of sunshine can make dead leaves glow!

I am thankful we shelled all those purple-hull peas last Summer! Got a pack of them from the freezer last night, cooked them and made cornbread, and had a simple, but delicious, supper.

Have a blessed day!

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

snow on the barn roof, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, November 12, 2019
Here in the southern United States we got an early taste of Winter this week. With rain and temperatures falling below freezing, we were expecting sleet and icy roads. But that didn't happen, and I am thankful!

I am thankful we had only a light dusting of snow (most visible on rooftops, and a little on the ground).
For those of you with much more severe weather, I hope you are all safe and warm.

Have a blessed day!

I am thankful that we did not have any damage from Tropical Storm Olga, and thankful that we were without electricity for less than 24 hours. In some areas it was a couple of days before power was restored.

Have a blessed day!

Tree Following, December 11, 2018

Tree Following and Our World Tuesday

Tree Following is fun! Just choose a tree and photograph it once a month as it goes through the changing seasons of the year. Post the photos on your blog between the 7th and 14th of each month, and link to Tree Following at The SquirrelBasket.

Lee County, Mississippi, USA, December 4, 2018
The tree I am following this year is a Red Maple, Acer rubrum. Like most of our deciduous trees, it is completely bare in the Winter except for a few dry leaves still hanging on...

.

… and these buds that are waiting for the warmer weather of Spring!

Have a wonderful day!

Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday, and Floral Friday Fotos

1. After The Rain (Sky Watch Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, December 1, 2018
We are thankful that the rain stopped before the temperatures dropped below freezing again.

2. Autumn Color
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, December 2, 2018
My Spirea 'Ogon' is a golden yellow!

And some of the leaves are beginning to darken to a bronze color.

3. Amaryllis Lily (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, December 6, 2018
Hippeastrum, commonly called Amaryllis, may be grown outside in areas with mild winter weather, but for most of us they are houseplants. The bulbs are very popular as Christmas gifts as they are very easy to grow and have large blooms. This bulb (I bought it for myself) put up two bloom stalks so when these flowers fade there are more to come!

One of the buds met with an accident. I put it in a small jar of water, and it opened up, too!
(The slight variation in color between the two photos is because one is with flash and the other without).

4. Mistletoe
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, December 4, 2018
We usually think of parasites as animals, but there are parasitic plants, too. For several hundred years it has been a Christmas tradition for lovers to kiss under the Mistletoe.

Mistletoe is poisonous so be very careful if you use it as part of your Christmas decorations.

5. Christmas Joy!
Prentiss County, Mississippi. USA, December 3, 2018
A friend's husband cut a Birch limb into small rounds, and my friend hand-lettered the JOY and gave one to me. May your life be filled with Christmas Joy!

Have a wonderful day!

1. Pickwick Lake (Sky Watch Friday)
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, November 11, 2018
A jet contrail cuts across the sky above Pickwick Lake. The structure on the right is the lock and dam.

2. Favorite Photo of the Week
Great Blue Heron, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, November 11, 2018
If you want to see long-legged wading birds, remember to look up, too!

3. Autumn Color
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, November 6, 2018
Yellow on yellow!

4. Pony (Saturday's Critters)
Tishomingo County, Mississippi, USA, November 5, 2018
I see several ponies and horses here whenever I drive by, but they seem to prefer the far side of the pasture. Finally, I saw a pony close to the road - and a real cutie it is!

5. Pileated Woodpecker (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, November 10, 2018
I glanced out the window as I went to the kitchen to make myself a cup of hot tea, and look! a Pileated Woodpecker, Dryocopus pileatus, on a dead limb of my apple tree!

If you see a tree with rectangular pieces of bark chipped away, it is most likely the work of Pileated Woodpeckers. They are searching for insects to eat. They supplement their insect diet with fruit, berries, and nuts, and you may see them at suet feeders, too.

Have a wonderful day!

Tree Following, November 13, 2018

Tree Following and Our World Tuesday

Tree Following is a fun meme and easy to join! Just select a tree, photograph it once a month as it goes through the seasons of the year, and post a photo on your blog between the 7th and 14th of the month.

Lee County, Mississippi, USA, October 30, 2018
I am following a Red Maple tree, Acer rubrum, that was planted as a memorial to a child killed in an auto accident. The leaves began showing Autumn color late in October, and I am glad I made this photo then. We had wind and rain that knocked off a lot of the leaves last week.

Lee County, Mississippi, USA, November 6, 2018
It still has pretty leaves, but just not as many as before.

Have a great week!

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Lauderdale County, Alabama, USA, November 3, 2018
I am thankful for warm, sunny days that somehow wriggle their way in between the cold, rainy days of November. Last Saturday was one!
(Don't worry; my husband was driving).

Tennessee River, Lauderdale County, Alabama, USA, November 3, 2018
Days when the morning fog lifts, and the sun brings a sparkle to ponds, lakes, and rivers!
(I was amazed at the amount of sparkle on the water - almost like ice).

Lauderdale County, Alabama, USA, November 3, 2018
Days when the sunshine highlights the Autumn colors!

Tishomingo County, Mississippi, USA, November 3, 2018
I am thankful for trees, and grass, and sunny skies!
