Harvest Monday: Figs, August 9, 2021

Harvest Monday and Our World Tuesday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 8, 2021
Our figs are getting ripe!

Something, probably a rabbit, has been eating those close to the ground. Or it might have been our dog!

We pick only as much as we can eat in a couple of days because figs are fragile and do not keep well. They can be cooked and made into fig preserves, but we prefer to eat them fresh.

I hope you have a great week!

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 29, 2021
I am thankful for home-grown cucumbers. With 'Burpless Beauty' Cucumbers there really is less burping! And they taste good too!

I hope you are having a great week!

Thankful Thursday, June 24, 2021

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

I am thankful today for new potatoes!

Do you sometimes reach into your potato bin and find that the last few potatoes have sprouted?
Do you know that you can plant them and grow new potatoes?

In early March I put four sprouted red potatoes in a few inches of potting soil in a huge plastic flower pot set in full sun, and covered them with a few more inches of potting soil. At the plants grew, I added more potting soil until the pot was full. (Similar to 'hilling up' if planted in the ground). We had plenty of rain, so no additional care was needed.

When the tops died down three months later, I dug them up.

After I brushed off the dirt and adjusted the scale for the weight of the plate, two pounds and five ounces of new red potatoes!

The first time I grew potatoes, I used a grow bag and seed potatoes, but the basic process is the same with kitchen-sprouted red potatoes and a big flower pot.

Have a blessed day!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, June 2021

The 15th of each month is Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day hosted by Carol at May Dreams Gardens

What's blooming in June in my garden in the northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

Click on the photos to see them at their best.

My flowers like to play tricks on me by blooming in between Bloom Days - Butterfly Weed on June 3rd.

My Spiderworts have been standing up proud with masses of blooms until heavy rains last week knocked them down. But they are still blooming laying down in the grass.

Day Lilies are everywhere!

Last week I bought these lovely Dianthus plants - three pots of them! I am not sure where I am going to plant them.

Another recent purchase - Strawberry plants. I've never seen red blooming ones; my others have white blooms. No ripe berries yet, so I don't know how the taste compares to my other strawberries.

My 'Burpless Beauty' Cucumbers are blooming, and there are a few tiny cucumbers.

Bees love the blooms on the Linden Tree (aka Basswood)

My mind is really slipping - I almost forgot my Gardenia!

For foliage as pretty as a flower - Nandina! And it produces tiny white blooms in the Spring.

Now for a look at things to come

The Mulleins (wildflowers), Verbascum thapsus, are putting up bloom stalks!

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

Potatoes, May 24, 2021

Harvest Monday and Our World Tuesday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 24, 2021
I harvested my first potatoes today! From four 'Red Norland' seed potatoes, I have one pound and one ounce of new potatoes. I spaced out my plantings so I should have some more ready to harvest in about ten days. In case you think the tiny potatoes are too small to use, they will be good dropped whole and unpeeled into a pot of vegetable soup.

Have a wonderful week!

Strawberries, May 17, 2021

Harvest Monday and Our World Tuesday

First Strawberries of the year!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 17, 2021
I do not have a lot of strawberry plants, but if I can get a handful of berries to add to my breakfast cereal each morning, I am happy!

I hope you have a wonderful week!
