Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday, and Floral Friday Fotos

1. 97℉ (Sky Watch Friday)
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, July 18, 2017
Our neighbors cut their hay. With temperatures soaring into the high 90sF (36C), it won't take long for it to be dry enough to bale. (They baled it the day after I took this photo).

2. Horses
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 19, 2017
I always slow down to admire these horses whenever I drive along their road.

They sure do live in a beautiful place!

3. What is this?
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, July 6, 2017
I did not know what this was until I read about it in the newspaper: Newspaper Article
It is a station for re-charging electric cars!

4. Catfish

Belzoni, Mississippi, USA: Catfish Capital of the World!
It must be true since it is proclaimed on the side of a U-Haul moving van!

Booneville, Mississippi, USA, July 19, 2017

Belzoni is in Humphreys County on the western side of the state towards the Mississippi River.
The area produces 60% of the farm-raised catfish in the United States. Personally I like catfish, grilled or fried, but I have a cousin who does not like it at all.

5. Begonias (Floral Friday Fotos)
I was captivated by the photo on the package.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 20, 2017
And I was not disappointed!

I hope you are having a beautiful day!

Bluebirds, July 19, 2017

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
B is for Bluebirds - members of the Thrush family native to North America

Male Eastern Bluebird, Shiloh, Tennessee, USA

There are three kinds of Bluebirds. This is the Eastern Bluebird, Sialia sialis. The other two are Western Bluebirds, Sialia mexicana, and Mountain Bluebirds, Sialia currucoides.

The names are self-explanatory: Eastern Bluebirds in the eastern part of the continent, Western Bluebirds in the western part of the continent, and Mountain Bluebirds in the Rocky Mountains of the US and Canada.

Female Eastern Bluebird, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, April 3, 2017
Bluebirds eat worms and insects (beetles, crickets, grasshoppers, spiders, and caterpillars) during the Spring and Summer. In the Autumn and Winter they search for fruit and wild berries to eat. Bluebirds in Canada and the northern parts of the United States may migrate as far south as the Central American countries to spend the Winter.

Have a wonderful day!

Harvest Monday, July 17, 2017

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 13, 2017
I have ripe strawberries! Okay, I confess, my first harvest was only ten berries, but this is my first time growing strawberries, and I am excited about it! The plants are still blooming so there will be more berry picking in the future.

I hope you have a beautiful week!

Your bird for today is...
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, July 10, 2017
An Eastern Bluebird with a worm in bright sunlight!
(I think it may be breaking the worm into smaller pieces to carry it back to its nest).

Have a blessed day!

Pelican, July 15, 2017

Pickwick, Tennessee, July 4, 2017
I saw a small flock of American White Pelicans swimming in Pickwick Lake. I wonder if this one is raising its wings to cast a shadow on the water in order to better see fish close to the surface. Thanks to you Anni for that possible explanation of its behavior!

Have a wonderful day!

3. What country folk do...
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 7, 2017
We shell peas! Last Friday I bought a bushel of purple-hull peas. Shelling them was an all-day job, but now I have plenty of peas in my freezer. When we eat them this Winter, they will taste of this Summer's sunshine!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 12, 2017
And to go with the Purple-hull Peas - Purple Okra! Very pretty, but Purple Okra turns green like regular okra when it is cooked.

4. Wildlife (Saturday's Critters and Camera Critters)

Mallard Ducks on Pickwick Lake

5. Solar Power (Sky Watch Friday)
McNairy County, Tennessee, USA, July 10, 2017
Driving along in southwestern Tennessee, I was seeing lots of corn fields, and then suddenly there were acres and acres of solar panels for generating electricity!

Good Fences, July 13, 2017

Good Fences and Thankful Thursday
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, July 4, 2017
This fence is around a gated community overlooking Pickwick Lake.

Below is a view of some of the houses as seen from the other side of the lake.

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, July 10, 2017
Zoom lens shorten distances; the lake is much wider than it looks in this photo. The circle in the water (lower right) is one of the designated swimming areas in Pickwick Landing State Park.

Tiger Lily for Thankful Thursday
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 5, 2017
I am thankful that my mother (who lived to be 90 years old) taught me to love gardening.

Red-winged Blackbird, July 12, 2017

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
A is for Agelaius phoeniceus - Red-winged Blackbird

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, July 6, 2017
Red-winged Blackbirds, Agelaius phoeniceus, are seen all across North America, from Canada to Mexico, and down into some of the Central American countries.

The males are easily identified by their bright red and yellow shoulder patches. This one seemed to enjoy posing for me. The streaky brown females are much quieter and less often seen than the males.

Have a wonderful day!

Monday Mural, July 10, 2017

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, July 1, 2017
One of the best things of Summer is buying fruits and vegetables directly from the people who grow them. This large mural, "Buy Local Produce," is at the Tupelo Farmers' Market on South Spring Street.

Have a great week!

Willy Nilly Friday, Floral Friday Fotos, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

1. Guitars on Main Street
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, July 1, 2017
Metal sculptures along Main Street honor Tupelo's native son, Elvis Presley.

Blue Suede Shoes!

A hunk, a hunk of burning love! Do you see the hearts in the flames?

I am not sure how many guitar sculptures there are. I will photograph them for you as I find more of them. I feel like I am going on a Treasure Hunt!

If you missed my other guitar photos, you can find them Here and Here

2. Smart Marketing
Do you like the Jelly Belly brand of jelly beans? I buy sugar-free because I am diabetic.
.
.
Do you know what they do with the jelly beans that are not perfectly shaped?

They package them and sell them as Belly Flops! Same great flavors, just not perfect ovals.

3. The most unusual thing I have seen this week...
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, July 4, 2017
...a car that wears mascara!

4. Wildlife (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, July 4, 2017
The Great Blue Heron on the left claimed this bit of ground on the Tennessee River as its own personal fishing spot. Then the Heron on the right flew directly into its face and chased it away!

5. Lee County Master Gardeners (Floral Friday Fotos)
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, July 1, 2017
This small area near the railroad tracks has been transformed into a beauty spot by the Lee County group of Master Gardeners.
