I am thankful that it is Summer and the farmer's markets have lots of fresh vegetables for sale. And I am thankful for the Purple-Hull Peas I bought at our local farmer's market yesterday!
Purple-Hull Peas are a variety of Black-Eyed Peas.

I am especially thankful today for roadside produce stands. Look what I found this morning - large, speckled butterbeans! Aren't they beautiful? And they will be delicious when we eat them for supper tonight.

I am thankful for home-grown cucumbers. With 'Burpless Beauty' Cucumbers there really is less burping! And they taste good too!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, June 2021

What's blooming in June in my garden in the northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

My flowers like to play tricks on me by blooming in between Bloom Days - Butterfly Weed on June 3rd.

My Spiderworts have been standing up proud with masses of blooms until heavy rains last week knocked them down. But they are still blooming laying down in the grass.

Day Lilies are everywhere!

Last week I bought these lovely Dianthus plants - three pots of them! I am not sure where I am going to plant them.

Another recent purchase - Strawberry plants. I've never seen red blooming ones; my others have white blooms. No ripe berries yet, so I don't know how the taste compares to my other strawberries.

My 'Burpless Beauty' Cucumbers are blooming, and there are a few tiny cucumbers.

Bees love the blooms on the Linden Tree (aka Basswood)

My mind is really slipping - I almost forgot my Gardenia!

For foliage as pretty as a flower - Nandina! And it produces tiny white blooms in the Spring.

Now for a look at things to come

The Mulleins (wildflowers), Verbascum thapsus, are putting up bloom stalks!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, October 2020

There are still a few blooms on the Turk's Cap, aka Sleeping Hibiscus

'Iceberg' Rose

These Asters were a gift from a friend last year.

The Phlox are almost finished. But they will be blooming again next Summer.

My Butterfly Bush is still blooming.

My Encore Azalea 'Autumn Royalty' is the prettiest I have ever seen it! Eight years ago it was a nice little potted plant. Now it is taller than I am.

Unless we have an early frost, the buds on my 'Confederate Rose' Hibiscus will have time to open.

The peppers are still blooming in the vegetable garden.

They produce small mild peppers, similar in taste to bell peppers. They are sweetest if left on the plants to ripen to a deep orange color, but I usually pick a variety of colors.

Harvest Monday, Our World Tuesday, and All Seasons

First I need to say I do not know the name of these peppers. A friend, who did not know what they were, gave the plants to me at the end of May. They bloomed very well, but were slow to develop peppers. It was only a couple of weeks ago that we began to get a harvest.

They are mild like a bell pepper. These will go into the large green salad we are having for lunch today.

I am thankful for home-grown cucumbers!
I picked the first cucumber of the season on Monday: eight ounces of crispy crunch for our salads!

And this morning's cucumber weighted slightly more: nine ounces. Later in the Summer, the vines should be producing faster, and I will have enough to make pickles.

There is nothing more pleasant than walking out in the garden in the early morning before the day gets hot and being greeted by a chorus of birdsong. It gets the day started off right! Feed the birds!

Now on to the flowers...

I am thankful my 'Burpless Beauty' Cucumbers are blooming! Usually male flowers bloom first, so it may be a few days before the female flowers that produce cucumbers appear. But I am hopeful!

A Garden Experiment, June 1, 2020

Harvest Monday and All Seasons

My brother gave me this Potato Planter for Christmas. Basically, it is just a sturdy plastic bag with a Velcro flap on the side. I bought 'Red Norland' seed potatoes.

On March 5, I planted 4 seed potatoes in the bag. As the plants grew, I added more soil until the bag was full. We have had plenty of rain this Spring, so no additional care was needed.

The tops of the potato plants began to die about a week ago, so on Saturday the moment of truth arrived.
I opened the Velcro flap, removed some soil, and...

… there they were - Potatoes!

Big ones, little ones, and all sizes in-between!

After brushing off the dirt and adjusting the scale for the weight of the glass plate: 2 lbs. 4oz. (1 kg.) of potatoes with hardly any effort at all on my part!

Here is the recipe I used to cook a few of them, though for just the two of us, I reduced the pan size and ingredient amounts. They were delicious!

I am not physically able to grow a large garden; this Potato Planter bag was easy and fun.
I have more potatoes in a large flower pot that will be ready soon. Wish it had a side flap to open!
Also in containers, I have tomato plants, pepper plants, and cucumber vines.
