Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, December 29, 2020
All the European Starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, in North America are descended from 100 birds released in New York City in 1890 (Source: All About Birds). They are invasive and regarded as pests in many places, but they sure are handsome birds! This one has its non-breeding feathers. Their breeding feathers are darker and more iridescent.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas!

Happy New Year!

Northern Mockingbirds, Mimus polyglottos, are members of the Thrasher family, and like other Thrashes are able to mimic whatever sounds they hear - other birds, dogs, cats, etc. They are 'northern' because they have southern cousins in South America.

I like detective stories and I like animal stories, so how could I resist "The Highly Effective Detective Goes to the Dogs" by Richard Yancey? And of course, I have to read the first book "The Highly Effective Detective" first. I am reading more books than usual this year. Are you reading more?

Pelicans, December 2, 2020

Wild Bird Wednesday and My Corner of the World

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, November 8, 2020
American White Pelicans, Pelecanus erythrorhynchos, are migratory birds that breed in the northwestern United States and central Canada, but spend the Winter months in the southern parts of the United States and Mexico. Unlike Brown Pelicans who dive for fish, White Pelicans catch their food by swimming on the surface and scooping up fish with their bills. These were preening their feathers at Pickwick Lake.

The Tufted Titmouse, Baeolophus bicolor, is a year-round resident of the Eastern half of the United States and the Great Lakes region of Canada. They are very fast-moving little birds that grab a seed from the feeder and fly off to the trees to hide it to eat later! During the warmer months, they eat a wide variety of insects.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, November 2020

The northeast corner of Mississippi USA zone 7b
I am glad I made these photos a few day ago - it is raining here today.

Carolina Jessamine is a vine that blooms after the Summer's heat has passed.

Turk's Cap is also called Sleeping Hibiscus.

My red Rose has a few blooms. Our temperatures have been so mild that the bees are still buzzing around!

But the star of the show this year is the "Autumn Royalty" Encore Azalea, blooming for 4 months now!
