Memorial Day, May 31, 2021

The last Monday in May is Memorial Day here in the United States.

Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, May 30, 2021
We visited Shiloh National Military Park on Sunday afternoon.

There are more than 3,500 soldiers' graves from the American Civil War (1861-1865).

The taller markers have names on them; the shorter markers are unknown soldiers.

.

I picked one grave at random for a close-up photo. (One of my ancestors fought in the Civil War. He was wounded, but survived the war.)

I hope you have a beautiful day!

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, May 23, 2021
Canada Geese are now staying here all year, instead of migrating back to Canada in the Spring.

The babies are so cute!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, May 21, 2021
I was happy to get this photo of an American White Pelican, Pelecanus erythrorhynchos, stretching its wings to show the black wing tips that are usually visible only in flight. With an 8 foot (243cm) or more wingspan, the White Pelican is one of the largest American flying birds.

I hope you have a beautiful day!

Potatoes, May 24, 2021

Harvest Monday and Our World Tuesday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 24, 2021
I harvested my first potatoes today! From four 'Red Norland' seed potatoes, I have one pound and one ounce of new potatoes. I spaced out my plantings so I should have some more ready to harvest in about ten days. In case you think the tiny potatoes are too small to use, they will be good dropped whole and unpeeled into a pot of vegetable soup.

Have a wonderful week!

I'd Rather B Birdin' and Saturday's Critters

male Northern Cardinal, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 16, 2021
We have hanging bird feeders, and we put bird seed in a pan on the ground. We have a lot of birds that visit both kinds of feeders.

Raccoon, Prentiss county, Mississippi, USA, May 14, 2021
But other critters like them too!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Strawberries, May 17, 2021

Harvest Monday and Our World Tuesday

First Strawberries of the year!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 17, 2021
I do not have a lot of strawberry plants, but if I can get a handful of berries to add to my breakfast cereal each morning, I am happy!

I hope you have a wonderful week!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, May 2021

Northeast Mississippi, USA, zone 7b
The 15th of each month is Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day

Click on the photos to see them at their best.

My white rose bloomed in April and is resting awhile, but I have three other roses blooming.

And there are a few blooms left on the Kerria japonica shrub 'Pleniflora.' It may look like a rose, but it is not.

A Clematis whose name I have forgotten

Honeysuckle is an invasive vine, but very pretty. You just have to keep it under control or it will try to take over the place! The buds are pink, but they open white. As the flowers wither they turn yellow.

Another invasive plant - Thistle.

Butterweed, a wildflower

Another wildflower, Spiderwort

And now a look at things to come...
...there are buds on the Hydrangeas!

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!
