Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

My Corner of the World and Wild Bird Wednesday

Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Sphyrapicus varius, are migratory Woodpeckers that are here in the southeastern United States only during the Winter months. They breed in the northeastern United States and across much of Canada. This is a male; females have the red crown, but with a white throat. As their name suggests, they drill holes in trees to drink the sap, and they also eat insects. You can attract them to your yard with suet feeders.

I hope you are having a great week!

Loon

Pickwick Lake, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, February 22, 2024
The Common Loon, Gavia immer, breeds in Canada, but migrates south for the Winter. It was a very cloudy day, and the water reflects the grey of the clouds, but I am glad we went to the lake. It has been several years since I have seen a Loon, and I was excited to get a photo of this one!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, February 2024

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 2024
In January we had snow and sleet on the ground and below freezing temperatures for nine days. It set my flowers back several weeks. I looked at my February Bloom Day posts for the last few years. I had masses of Daffodils, but this year I have only a few buds.

Hopefully, my March Bloom Day post will be full of Daffodils!

Hellebores just laugh at cold weather!

The Spirea has only a few blooms, but I am hoping for hundreds of these tiny blooms in the next few weeks!

Blind Date with a Book

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 14, 2024
To celebrate Valentine's Day the library wrapped books in red paper, wrote a description and the barcode on the front, and offered them for checkout sight unseen. A blind date with a book!
What book lover could resist? Not me!

I unwrapped it this morning - "Bittersweet" by Colleen McCullough. Set in Australia in the early 1900s, it is a story about four sisters as each one follows her dreams and ambitions. Sounds good to me!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Monday Murals

Myrtle, Mississippi, USA, February 7, 2024
Myrtle is a small town in northeast Mississippi. Artist Katie Sappington of Due Moon Creations titled this mural of children against a colorful sunrise "The future of Myrtle."

I like the hearts on their shirts, and...

...if you look closely, you can see that they are all holding hands!

Did you notice the bird in the tree?

We put sunflower seed on the ground for the Morning Doves, Zenaida macroura. The American Goldfinches, Spinus tristis, love the seeds, too. Both birds are common all across North America.

Thankful Thursday

I am thankful for the ladies in our Book Club! Some of us have known each other for years; others are new friends. We met Monday to discuss "The Street Lawyer" by John Grisham. It was about the legal problems of homeless people, and those who try to help them. It grabbed our attention from the first and held it all the way through!

Have a blessed day!
