Thankful Thursday: Rain!

Althea bloom, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 18, 2024
Today I am most thankful for the rain that came last night (just a little over 2 inches!).

Have a blessed day!

We had rain on Monday, but sunshine with a few clouds for the rest of the week. The plants in the field are still very small, but I think that they are soybeans.

Happy Friday!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, May 2024

The 15th of each month is Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day at May Dreams Gardens (see link below).

I am in the northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b, and I am glad I made these photos a day early. Yesterday afternoon we had heavy rain with pea-sized hail!

I found this Peruvian Lily, Alstroemeria, on the discount shelf. It had a couple of broken stems and was marked down to almost half-price. A real bargain!

I bought 24 Marigolds. I have planted some, and hope to get the others set out today.

Spiderwort, a wildflower that I dug up off the side of the road several years ago.

Another wildflower, Butterflyweed

The Burr Rose got its name because the buds have tiny spines like a burr.

My mother called this type of Running Rose "Seven Sisters" because the blooms grow in clusters.

There are still a few blooms on the Kerria Japonica shrub.

These Begonias are in a hanging basket on my porch.

I have had this Clematis vine for many years.

This tiny butterfly, a Gray Hairstreak, posed for me while I was getting photos of the blooms, so of course, I have to include it! I am not sure of the name of the small wildflower in the background, but that makes it a Bloom Day photo, right?

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

Sky Watch Friday

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, May 4, 2024
We had cloudy skies for the Blue Suede Cruise Car Show in Tupelo last Saturday.

I don't know the official number of cars there on Saturday, but there have been over a thousand cars at each year's event for the past several years.

It is a once-a-year free event that always draws large crowds.

This 1969 Ford Mustang was my favorite!

Happy Friday!

Loon

Pickwick Lake, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, February 22, 2024
The Common Loon, Gavia immer, breeds in Canada, but migrates south for the Winter. It was a very cloudy day, and the water reflects the grey of the clouds, but I am glad we went to the lake. It has been several years since I have seen a Loon, and I was excited to get a photo of this one!

Have a great weekend!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, February 2024

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 2024
In January we had snow and sleet on the ground and below freezing temperatures for nine days. It set my flowers back several weeks. I looked at my February Bloom Day posts for the last few years. I had masses of Daffodils, but this year I have only a few buds.

Hopefully, my March Bloom Day post will be full of Daffodils!

Hellebores just laugh at cold weather!

The Spirea has only a few blooms, but I am hoping for hundreds of these tiny blooms in the next few weeks!

Bluebird (from my archives)

My Corner of the World and Wild Bird Wednesday

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, January 6, 2023
We have had very cold weather with snow and sleet on the ground for a week. Higher temperatures yesterday and rain has melted the snow, and it is still raining today. To find a bird photo for today, I looked at photos from January of last year and found this male Eastern Bluebird, Sialia sialis, on a fence post looking for something to eat.
I hope you are having a good week!

We are hoping the sunshine will help melt the snow/sleet/ice combination that has been on the ground and the roads since Monday. But today's high temperature is predicted to be just barely above freezing.

Thankful Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 18, 2024
I am thankful that my pantry shelves were full - no need to rush to the grocery store before the winter storm.
I am thankful we had more propane added to our tank last week - no worry about not being warm enough.
I am thankful that the electric power stayed on - the snow and sleet did not cause trees to fall on the lines.
I am thankful that I have 10 books checked out from the library, and thankful for the extra time to read!

Have a blessed day!

Carolina Wrens, Thryothorus ludovicianus, are common here where I live in the southeastern part of the United States. Their primary food sources are insects and spiders, and they will come to suet feeders in cold weather.

We had snow Sunday night, but then it turned to sleet for most of the day Monday. It looks like snow, but it is really ice! Very slick, very dangerous. And with below freezing temperatures for the next few days, it will be the weekend before it melts and it is safe to get out again.

I hope you have a good week!
