Black Vulture, August 31, 2016

Black Vultures, Coragyps atratus, can be found across much of the southeastern United States. If you look closely you can see the tips of white wing patches that are much more visible in flight. Black Vultures are scavengers, feeding on dead animals that they locate by their keen eyesight.

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Great Blue Heron, August 24, 2016

ABC Wednesday, Wild Bird Wednesday and I'd Rather B Birdin'
G is for the Great Blue Heron

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, June 6, 2016
Great Blue Herons, Ardea Herodias, can be found across much of the United States and the southern parts of Canada. They are most often seen standing at the edges of lakes or ponds, watching the water for an unwary fish, their principal food. This one is standing on the pedestrian walkway beside the Tennessee River.

Their throats expand so they can swallow surprisingly large fish.

The time lapse between the first image and the third image - only 6 seconds!

Wild Bird Wednesday and I'd Rather B Birdin'
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA June, 5, 2016
Northern Mockingbirds, Mimus polyglottos, are singers of sweet songs, able to mimic many other bird's songs.

Northern Mockingbirds are common across the southern United States, and they venture as far north as the Great Lakes region to breed in the Summer. (There is a Southern Mockingbird that lives in South America).

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day August 2016

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day
Northeast Mississippi, USA zone 7

ABC Wednesday
F is for Flowers

A few years ago I planted several types of coneflowers in this flower bed, but only one survived and multiplied.

Their foliage is getting ragged, but the Marigolds keep on blooming.

I have five Sunflower plants that sprouted from seed spilled under a birdfeeder. They are not very big, but each plant has several blooms.

White Cypress Vine that I bought at a Master Gardeners' Plant Sale.

I got a late start with my Zinnias, but they are blooming okay now.

This butterfly on the Butterfly Bush, Buddleia, is looking a little tattered, but it is still flitting around, sipping nectar just fine.

The Crape Myrtles have been magnificent this year.

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 6, 2016

This is one of my cats, Big Jay, waking up from his nap in the pear tree. He is too fat, lazy, and well-fed to be a threat to the birds. He won't even kill mice. Worthless cat, but we love him!

Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds seem to be in constant motion. I was delighted to get a photo of this female sitting still. Only the males have the ruby-red throats.

Eastern Bluebird, August 10, 2016

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
E is for the Eastern Bluebird
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, August 1, 2016
Eastern Bluebirds, Sialia sialis, are found in the eastern half of the United States and Canada in open woodlands and fields with scattered trees. Their range also includes parts of Mexico and some Central American countries. They are cavity nesting birds, making use of natural tree cavities and man-made bird houses. They eat insects, berries and fruit, and may raise two broods a year.

Blue Monday: Pickwick, August 8, 2016

Tennessee River at Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, August 1, 2016
Pickwick Dam (with the highway across the top) generates electric power. The structure on the far shore is a lock to let boats go through. It is a popular fishing area, and we often see tug boats with their barges on the river, too.

Green Heron, August 3, 2016

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, June 30, 2016
Green Herons, Butorides virescens, are smaller than most Herons and blend in with their surroundings. If I had not seen it fly, I probably would not have noticed it. Like other Herons they can fold their necks down onto their chests. The streaks on the neck mark this one as a juvenile.

They can be seen in the eastern half of United States from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico and along the west coast of both Canada and the United States. They have been known to drop twigs or insects into the water to lure fish close enough for them to catch.
