Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, October 2020

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

There are still a few blooms on the Turk's Cap, aka Sleeping Hibiscus

'Iceberg' Rose

These Asters were a gift from a friend last year.

The Phlox are almost finished. But they will be blooming again next Summer.

My Butterfly Bush is still blooming.

My Encore Azalea 'Autumn Royalty' is the prettiest I have ever seen it! Eight years ago it was a nice little potted plant. Now it is taller than I am.

Unless we have an early frost, the buds on my 'Confederate Rose' Hibiscus will have time to open.

The peppers are still blooming in the vegetable garden.

They produce small mild peppers, similar in taste to bell peppers. They are sweetest if left on the plants to ripen to a deep orange color, but I usually pick a variety of colors.

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

Peppers, September 29, 2020

Harvest Monday, Our World Tuesday, and All Seasons

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 29, 2020
First I need to say I do not know the name of these peppers. A friend, who did not know what they were, gave the plants to me at the end of May. They bloomed very well, but were slow to develop peppers. It was only a couple of weeks ago that we began to get a harvest.

They are mild like a bell pepper. These will go into the large green salad we are having for lunch today.

Hope you have a wonderful week!

October Salad Days, October 26, 2013

'Grand Rapids' Lettuce, October 5, 2013
'Grand Rapids' Lettuce seeds were sown the last week in August
First harvest was October 5th, very near the '45 days to maturity' promised on the seed packet.
Now the weather is getting much colder, I'm covering the plants at night.
'Limestone Bibb' Lettuce, October 26, 2013
The first sowing of this lettuce failed to germinate, probably because the weather was still too hot.
'Limestone Bibb' Lettuces sown again on September 18. They are growing very slowly.

'Fooled You' mild Jalapeno Pepper, October 26, 2013
I've been covering the pepper plants at night hoping to coax a few more to get to eating size.
The rest of my garden (beans, tomatoes, okra) is finished. I'm already planning for next year!

First Frost, October 26, 2013
The view this morning at breakfast - first frost!
The field in the background is Soy Beans ready for harvest.

Have a beautiful day!

Two Years and Counting, October 3-4, 2013

The anniversary of my second year blogging passed by last week without my noticing it.
When I looked at my photos for the date, September 26,
I was happy to see it was the day we went to the Pumpkin Field Day In Jackson, Tennessee.

Ornamental Grass, September 26, 2013
It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky

Pumpkins grow in many different shapes, sizes, and colors
Being Pumpkin Field Day, of course, there were lots of pumpkins.

Capsicum, 'Chilly Chili'
But I was surprised to see how many marvelous ornamental peppers were growing there, too.

Capsicum 'Prairie Fire'

I forgot to get an ID for this.
And beautiful foliage plants.

Whale's Tongue Agave

Banana Trees with lovely pink ornamental grasses.
I must remember to go back in the Spring when the Iris will be blooming.
As for this week's weather, we had rain on Monday, partly cloudy skies the rest of the week,
with very pleasant temperatures.

Have a wonderful week-end!

End of the Month View, September 30, 2013

Sulphur Butterfly
Most of the tree leaves are still green, but a few are beginning to turn red or yellow.
I almost missed seeing this Sulphur butterfly on the Chinese Parasol Tree.

Chestnut Tree
Soon the Chestnut Tree's burrs will open. Even the dog likes to eat chestnuts!

Pear
Most of our pears are medium sized, but we get a few extra-large jumbos.

Okra
My Cow Horn Okra plants must think that they are trees this year.
I have six plants and they are twice as tall as my other okras (Clemson Spineless - 10 plants).
We have had a really good crop of okra this year, and as you can see, they are still blooming.

Jalapeno and Cayenne Peppers
The tomatoes are finished, but we are still getting a few peppers.

Marigolds
The Marigolds have bloomed steadily all year since I set the plants out in the Spring.

Spider Lilies
Recent rains have brought the Spider Lilies up!

Mums
Chrysanthemums are a sure sign that Autumn is here.

I hope you have enjoyed the End of the Month View of my garden.

Have a Wonderful Week!

Salad Days and Sky Watch Friday, September 27, 2013

The fourth Friday of each month is Salad Day at Veg Plotting
and every Friday is Sky Watch Friday.

Sweet Cayenne and mild Jalapeno peppers, and Sweet 100 (red) and Sun Sugar (yellow) tomatoes
Only a few tomatoes and peppers are left for salad ingredients in the Summer garden.

'Little Marvel' peas
I started the Autumn garden at the beginning of this month.
By the end of October, we hope to be adding little green peas to our salads.

Lettuce 'Grand Rapids'
My leaf lettuce 'Grand Rapids' is coming along nicely, but I had to re-sow the head lettuce 'Bibb'

Sky Watch Friday
This is just one of the many unusual pieces of garden art at the Research Center
Yesterday we went to the West Tennessee Research and Education Center in
Jackson, Tennessee for Pumpkin Field Day. The morning began very foggy, but it cleared off
mid-morning to reveal beautiful blue skies.

Pumpkins, pumpkins, and more pumpkins!
If you are in the area, you should go see their pumpkin harvest exhibits.
They will be on display until December 1.

Have a beautiful week-end!

Of course, seeing all those wonderful pumpkins,
I was reminded to join Orange You Glad It's Friday: Click Here!

End of the Month View August 31, 2013

Trees and Shrubs:

Big Jay in the Pear Tree
Big Jay has decided that it is his job to protect the pears from the birds and squirrels.
But don't worry - he is too fat and lazy to actually catch anything.

Rose of Sharon
The Rose of Sharon shrubs continue to bloom well despite the Summer's heat.

Swallowtail Butterfly on Butterfly Bush
The Butterfly Bush is the most popular spot in the garden.

Vegetables:

My okra is growing so tall I can barely reach it.
We have two kinds of okra: 'Clemson Spineless' and 'Cow Horn'

Sweet Cayenne Pepper
The Sweet Cayenne peppers are out-producing the Jalapeno peppers.

'Improved Taylor' Beans
I first planted 'Improved Taylor' beans early in May and harvested in July.
This is my second crop, planted in mid-July.

'Super Fantastic' Tomatoes
The tomato vines are looking a bit ragged, but are still making tomatoes.
However, the tomatoes are not as large as they were in July.

Flowers:

Mums
It seems too early for Chrysanthemums to be blooming, but the buds are beginning to open.

'Homestead Purple' Verbena
I've been very pleased with this hardy Verbena I bought in the Spring.
It has really spread out and bloomed all Summer.

Encore Azalea
I'm excited to see that the Encore Azalea is blooming again!

Have a wonderful week-end!
