The pretty Black and Yellow Garden Spider, Argiope aurantia, may bite if disturbed, but it is not poisonous. Do not kill them! They help in the garden by eating the insects that attack your flowers and vegetables.

A Spider's View of the Sun, July 8, 2022

It was already 82F when I walked out in my front yard this morning at 7:30. The predicted high for today is 100F (38C). Do you see the spider web on the tree near the middle of the photo?

There you have it - a spider's view of the sun!
With that bright light, I think the spider was hiding somewhere with its eyes closed!

(That is pine straw caught in the web as it fell from the tree).

I have a different kind of sky photo for you today - a Spiny-backed Orb Weaver in bright morning sunlight!

2. Phlox (Floral Friday Fotos)

Phlox is a plant genus of 67 species found mostly in North America. I think this is a Phlox panticulata that is also known as Garden Phlox. It attracts bees and butterflies, and it is also a popular food for deer, rabbits, and groundhogs.

3. Good Food!

I love apples eaten as fresh fruit or cooked in a pie! These are 'Ginger Gold.'

For the Apple Tart: 3 cups peeled sliced apples, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, 2 or 3 generous dashes of cinnamon, 1 pie crust. Mix flour, sugar, cinnamon, and then stir in apples. Fill crust and fold up the edges, leaving the center open. Sprinkle crust lightly with sugar (optional). Bake at 350F for 25 to 30 minutes.

5. A New Bird For Me! (I'd Rather B Birdin')

Broad-winged Hawks, Buteo platypterus, are small hawks that breed in the eastern half of North America, and then migrate to the Central American countries to spend the Winter months. They eat small mammals, amphibians, and insects.

When I saw this one on the power line up the road from my house, I was not sure what it was. I am glad I turned the car around and went back for a second look. This is why I always have my camera with me!

… when I heard a loud THUNK! yesterday, I hurried outside to find that a female Cardinal had hit the window and fell onto the dog's bed.

I thought maybe a drink of water would help it recover, and when I took a jar lid of water to it, it was sitting up looking much better. When I checked on it a few minutes later, it had flown away - Happy Ending!

A Garden Spider, Argiope aurantia, has made its web near my carport. These large spiders are harmless to people, and beneficial to the garden, catching and eating insects.

Beautyberry, Callicarpa americana, has tiny pink blooms in early Summer, followed by purple berries to add color to the Autumn garden.

The Black and Yellow Garden Spiders, Argiope aurantia, are welcome in my garden. They do not bite people, and they catch and eat the insects that like to munch on my plants!
