Mockingbirds, November 18, 2017

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Tupelo, Mississippi, October 12, 2017
I am not sure what was going on between these two Mockingbirds. One would advance, and the other one would retreat.

Then the second one advanced and the first one retreated.

One turned away for a minute, and I thought he was leaving.

Then he turned and advanced towards to other bird again.

I wondered if it was a territorial dispute with a younger male challenging an older one.

I am sorry I could not stay to see the outcome. I had groceries in the car that I needed to get home and into the refrigerator.

Have a wonderful week-end!

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Colbert County, Alabama, USA, November 3, 2017
When we were driving around looking at the Autumn leaves last week, we met this pretty lady and her chauffeur, David. From her hair bows, I would guess she went Trick-or-Treating at Halloween!

She enjoyed being petted, and her fur was so soft!

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, November 6, 2017
We saw a small flock of Ring-billed Gulls, Larus delawarensis, at Pickwick Lake on Monday.

But only a few came close enough to shore for a good photo.

Have a wonderful week-end!

Assassin Bug, October 14, 2017

Lee County, Mississippi, USA, October 24, 2017
On the windshield of my car, the nymph (immature form) of an Assassin Bug. They are ugly little things (and they bite), but I thought the bright sunlight created an interesting shadow.

I really need to wash my car more often if I am going to use it in my photos!

Seeing this critter on the side of a U-Haul van brought back childhood memories of spending many Summer evenings happily chasing Fireflies around the yard.

Though it may look like this snake was right under my feet, I was a safe distance away.

I was very surprised to find a small Praying Mantis while I was checking the sugar-water levels in my Hummingbird feeders. With the distal section of its front legs folded down as in prayer, it is easy to see how it got its name.

Juvenile Ruby-throated Hummingbirds look very much like their mothers, but this one is beginning to show the red throat feathers that identifies it as a male. When he visited my feeders on Monday, he was with three other birds. I like to think of them as a family group

Warbler? September 23, 2017

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 10, 2017
I need help identifying this bird. A Tanager? An Oriole? A Warbler? Something else? ????
I had never seen this bird before, and have not seen it again since I made this photo. I live in the northeastern corner of Mississippi. Thank you for any suggestions to help ID this bird.

1. Green Market (Sky Watch Friday)
Corinth, Mississippi, USA, September 2, 2017
Cloudy skies did not discourage the shoppers at the Green Market in Corinth on Saturday. September's temperatures are considerably cooler than August, and we are thankful!

An arts and crafts festival held six times a year, the Green Market was voted 'Best Small Event' by the Mississippi Tourism Association.

2. An Amazing Experience (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 3, 2017
When I went outside early Sunday morning, I found two half-drowned Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in a puddle of water. Only their little heads were above the surface. I quickly picked them up and set them on my porch railing, hoping the sun would dry their feathers.
My husband brought one of the Hummingbird feeders over to them to see if they would drink the sugar-water. They just sat there too exhausted to move.

They were so wet, I was afraid that if they didn't feed soon they would die, so I picked one up and gently guided its bill into the feeder. I could see its throat quiver as it drank!

After a minute I set it down, picked up the other one, and carefully dipped its bill in the feeder.
I alternated the feeding back and forth from one to the other. They grew stronger after each sip, and began to flutter their wings, feebly at first, then more vigorously. My husband helped me hold them so they would not try to fly too soon. I knew if they crashed to the ground, our dog would pounce on them.

I am very happy to report that after about twenty minutes they were both able to fly from our hands to the safety of the nearby trees!

Rabbits and Hares are cousins, but I have never understood the difference between the two.
And you cannot tell by their names. The American Jackrabbit is actually a Hare!

4. Good Food!
Corinth, Mississippi, USA, September 7, 2017
Yesterday three friends and I went to McAlister's Deli in Corinth for lunch. I enjoyed the Harvest Chicken Salad on a Croissant with a dill pickle and fresh fruit. And Iced Tea, of course!
