Snowflakes, February 27, 2017

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 24, 2017
Snowflakes, Leucojum, are natives of Europe that have been naturalized in many other parts of the world. Snowflake blooms are small; these photos are greatly enlarged.

Snowflakes, Leucojum
To distinguish Snowflakes, Leucojum, from the very similar Snowdrops, Galanthus, remember the six petals on Snowflakes are of equal length, while the blooms of Snowdrops have three short and three longer petals.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

Ring-Billed Gull, February 22, 2017

G is for Gulls - Seabirds of the family Laridae

Fulton, Mississippi, USA, January 30, 2017
The Ring-billed Gull, Larus delawarensis, is a medium sized Gull commonly seen on inland bodies of water as well as along the ocean beaches of North America. You may even see them foraging for insects and worms in newly plowed fields.

Fulton, Mississippi, USA, January 30, 2017
They are graceful, acrobatic flyers able to quickly grab fish from the water. In the Spring they migrate north to their breeding grounds in Canada; then they return South to spend the Winter months in the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean Islands.

Have a wonderful day!

Critters: Chickadee, February 18, 2017

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 24, 2017
Carolina Chickadees are cavity nesting birds that eat insects most of the year, and will come to feeders for seeds and suet in the Winter. Their range includes the southeastern United States, while their close relatives, Black-capped Chickadees, live in Canada and the northern half of the United States, including parts of Alaska.

F is for Flowers

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day
Northeast Mississippi, USA zone 7

We have been blessed with a mild Winter: night temperatures below freezing with pleasantly cool days, and a good mixture of sun and rain. But we don't forget that Winter sometimes gives us snow in February before we get to Spring.
