Sky Watch Friday

Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, April 4, 2023
We took advantage of the sunshine on Tuesday to go to Shiloh National Military Park. This area is off-limits to protect a Bald Eagle's nest. It rained the rest of the week, and more rain is in the forecast today.

Have a great weekend!

1. Eagles (Sky Watch Friday and I'd Rather B Birdin')
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, December 6, 2020
We have been blessed with good weather this week - cool, but sunny. And in the tree...

Haliaeetus leucocephalus, Bald Eagles!

2. Tree (The Weekend in Black and White)
Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, December 6, 2020
We enjoyed our trip to Shiloh National Military Park on Sunday.

3. Morning Glory Bush (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, November 3, 2020
My Morning Glory Bush, Ipomoea fistulosa, bloomed in October and November, but I forgot to post a photo!

4. What I am Reading
I like detective stories and I like animal stories, so how could I resist "The Highly Effective Detective Goes to the Dogs" by Richard Yancey? And of course, I have to read the first book "The Highly Effective Detective" first. I am reading more books than usual this year. Are you reading more?

5. Spider (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 14, 2020
I went back to October to find a critter for today - a spider eating lunch.

Have a wonderful day!

Ginkgo Tree, November 10, 2020

Our World Tuesday and All Seasons

Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, November 8, 2020
This Ginkgo tree, splendid in its Autumn color, is in the Shiloh National Military Park cemetery.

Ginkgo trees are natives of China, but have been introduced to Europe and North America.

The leaves are fan-shaped.

And as they fall - a yellow carpet on the ground!

Have a wonderful day!

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, September 20, 2020
I am thankful for cooler weather! On Sunday we went to Shiloh National Military Park, and walked some of the trails. I am doubly thankful for that nice weather, especially since yesterday and today are rainy days.

I am thankful for the fragile beauty of tiny wildflowers!

Thankful Thursday, Little Things Thursday, and Signs 2

Indian Mound, Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, May 31, 2020
I am thankful that we were able to visit Shiloh National Military Park on Sunday. And thankful that the restrooms were open! We parked our car and followed a short walking trail to the American Indian Mounds Historical Site. There are several mounds grouped together on a bluff high above the Tennessee River.

There are wooden steps going up to the top of the largest mound.

The information signs are showing the effects of the tremendous amount of rain we have had in the last couple of years. The illustration depicts a community gathering around an athletic field for a game of stick-ball. Archeologists date the site as being about 800 years old, but they are not sure if these Native Americans were related to the present day tribes of Choctaw and Chickasaw that still live in the area.

From the top of the mound there is a beautiful view of the Tennessee River.

It was wonderful to be outdoors and feel "normal" for a few hours!

Have a blessed day!

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, January 7, 2020
I am thankful that the Bald Eagles, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, have returned to their nest at Shiloh National Military Park to raise another family this year! We saw only one bird when we were there on Tuesday, but I feel sure that its mate was nearby.

Have a blessed day!

Willy Nilly Friday, June 7, 2019

Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday,
and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Since most of this week's photos were made on cloudy days, click on them to get a clearer, brighter view.

1. Pickwick Lake (Sky Watch Friday)
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, June 4, 2019
Rain clouds were moving in when we met friends for lunch at the Pickwick Inn Restaurant at Pickwick Lake.

That is a Great Blue Heron preening himself on the nesting platform in the lake.

.

.

But the most interesting thing we saw on that grey cloudy day was a flock of American White Pelicans! They are large migratory birds not often seen in our part of the country. --- Click on the photo for the best view.

2. Shiloh National Military Park
Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, June 4, 2019
When we were at Shiloh National Military Park on Tuesday, they were washing the cannons!

And doing a very thorough job of it, too!

3. Farmer's Market
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, June 1, 2019
Sorry this photo is not as clear as I would like it to be, but I was shooting straight into bright morning sunlight. The Tupelo Farmer's Market allows only local folks (northeast Mississippi) to sell their wares, so it is not as busy now as it will be later in the Summer. Other farmer's markets in our area have a wider selection because they are selling fruit and vegetables grown in Florida. I visit them all!

Even though there were not a lot of vendors, I did buy a few things. Pecan pie bread (similar to banana-nut bread), home-canned squash pickles, and fresh peaches!

4. Insects (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 28, 2019
American Lady Butterfly

Silver-spotted Skipper

Ebony Jewelwing Damselfly

5. Woodpecker (I'd Rather B Birdin')

Red-headed Woodpecker, Melanerpes erythrocephalus

Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday,
and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

1. A Sunny Day! (Sky Watch Friday)
Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, January 27, 2019
We took advantage of last Sunday's sunny skies to visit Shiloh National Military Park.

2. The Most Interesting Thing I have Seen This Week
Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, January 27, 2019
Burls are large growths on trees that have a variety of causes: an injury, a bacteria, or a fungus are the most common.

To read more about Burls: Wikipedia article on Burls

3. A New Bird Feeder
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 25, 2019
We buy these metal mesh bird feeders because the squirrels gnaw holes in the plastic ones to get to the birdseed. The package says Squirrel Resistant - there is no such thing as Squirrel Proof!

There are hooks on the lid for easy opening to fill with sunflower seed. (The mesh is too large for small seeds). There is a perch around the bottom edge, but many of the smaller birds cling to the metal mesh to pull the seeds through the holes.

And the metal mesh collapses for easy storage during the Summer months. We had to buy a new one last week because something (a raccoon?) tore up one of our older ones.

4. Cows (Saturday's Critters)
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, January 28, 2019
If that cow looks like it has three (or four) front legs, it's because there is a calf on the other side!

5. Need Help with Bird ID (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 8, 2019
I think this is a Pine Warbler, Setophaga pinus, but I am not sure.

In this view you can see the bars on its wings. Any help with ID is appreciated!

Have a wonderful day!

1. Shiloh (Sky Watch Friday)
Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, May 7, 2018
We have had beautiful skies this week. On Monday we went to Shiloh National Military Park to check on the Eagles that are nesting there. The area around the nest tree was barricaded, off limits to visitors. The park rangers told us that one of the baby Eagles tried to fly too soon and is now on the ground. It appears to be unhurt, and its parents are feeding it. They said they expect it to be able to fly in a couple of weeks.

2. Blue Suede Cruise
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, May 4, 2018
Last Friday we went to the Blue Suede Cruise Car Show in Tupelo.

.

.

.

It was a fun day!

3. Favorite Photo of the Week (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, May 7, 2018
It looks like this Northern Mockingbird is singing, but actually it is scolding me for being too close to its nest!

4. Chipmunk (Saturday's Critters)
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, May 7, 2018
I was very surprised to see a Chipmunk scurrying across the sidewalk at the Pickwick Inn Restaurant!

5. Clematis (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 6, 2018
Clematis vines get their name from a Greek word meaning 'a climbing vine.' They originated in China, but may be found worldwide now. I have long forgotten the names of the ones I have.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 6, 2018
They grow best on a trellis in full sun, but are adaptable to partly shady areas.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
