Cardinals, January 27, 2021

Wild Bird Wednesday and My Corner of the World

Click on the photos to see them at their best.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 26, 2021
Northern Cardinals, Cardinalis cardinalis, are common birds in the eastern half of the United States, the Great Lakes region of Canada, and much of Mexico. Their crests are up when they are more alert and down smooth against their heads when they feel safe. They eat insects, fruit, and seeds. We fill the feeders with black oil sunflower seeds, and have a dozen or more Cardinals here all the time. They do not migrate.

The female Cardinal is not as colorful as the male, making it more difficult for predators to see her in her nest. And they are still very much wild birds even though they see us often and know we provide the food!

Have a blessed day!

At first I thought this was a Red-shouldered Hawk, Buteo lineatus. But then, looking at its tail, I thought: Cooper's Hawk, Accipiter cooperii. So to make a long story short, I don't know which Hawk this is! I am hoping someone can help me with identification.

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend!

Garden Bloggers Bloom Day and Thankful Thursday

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b
The 15th of each month is Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 11, 2021
I was concerned that I might not have any flowers for Bloom Day as we had snow on Monday.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 14, 2021
But the snow melted, the sun is shining, and there are buds on the Hellebores!

I am very thankful today for flowers that can survive the cold weather and bloom in the Winter!

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 11, 2021
Winters are cold here in northeast Mississippi with below freezing temperatures at night, but we don't often get snow. Yesterday's snow was not a big one (other parts of the state got more than we did), but very pretty as it was falling. And children were excited to get a snow day off from school!

It turned away from me to reposition the fish, and then just one big swallow and the fish was gone!
