Hummingbirds, August 29, 2018

ABC Wednesday, Wild Bird Wednesday, and Wednesday Around The World
H is for Hummingbirds: the smallest birds in the world (weight 2 to 20 grams, less than an ounce)

female Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 17, 2018
Hummingbirds get their name from the humming sound of their rapid wingbeats (more than 70 beats per second). They are found only in the Americas - 17 species in the United States, 5 species in Canada, and over 300 species in Central and South America. Many Hummingbirds are migratory, flying hundreds of miles each year.

In many species the male Hummingbirds have iridescent throat feathers that look dull until the light strikes them at the proper angle.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 28, 2018
Hummingbirds sip nectar from flowers and eat tiny insects. Many people hang Hummingbird feeders filled with sugar-water to attract them to their gardens. Here in north Mississippi, the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds usually arrive at the end of March to nest and raise their young. By the first of October they are on their journey south to spend the Winter in Central America.

Hope you are having a wonderful week!

  7. I've had lots of fun with hummingbird feeder the last three years. There are periods when we get so many that there is a feeding frenzy and then things quickly calm down. My guess is that we are experiencing migration fluctuations when that happens. - Margy

  8. Now and then I hear and see a hummingbird, sometimes two, fly into the yard. I love when that happens.
