Monday Mural: Butterfly

Booneville, Mississippi, USA, May 19, 2024
This Butterfly Mural is a popular place with teenage girls (and older ladies, too). They stand in front of it to get their photos made - looks like they have butterfly wings!

Have a wonderful week!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, May 2024

The 15th of each month is Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day at May Dreams Gardens (see link below).

I am in the northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b, and I am glad I made these photos a day early. Yesterday afternoon we had heavy rain with pea-sized hail!

I found this Peruvian Lily, Alstroemeria, on the discount shelf. It had a couple of broken stems and was marked down to almost half-price. A real bargain!

I bought 24 Marigolds. I have planted some, and hope to get the others set out today.

Spiderwort, a wildflower that I dug up off the side of the road several years ago.

Another wildflower, Butterflyweed

The Burr Rose got its name because the buds have tiny spines like a burr.

My mother called this type of Running Rose "Seven Sisters" because the blooms grow in clusters.

There are still a few blooms on the Kerria Japonica shrub.

These Begonias are in a hanging basket on my porch.

I have had this Clematis vine for many years.

This tiny butterfly, a Gray Hairstreak, posed for me while I was getting photos of the blooms, so of course, I have to include it! I am not sure of the name of the small wildflower in the background, but that makes it a Bloom Day photo, right?

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, October 2022

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA, zone 7b
September was hot and dry; October is cooler and was very dry until it rained on Wednesday.

My Asters ignored the dry conditions and have been (and still are) blooming profusely.

There are still a few blooms on the Turk's Cap that the butterflies are enjoying.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day and Saturday's Critters

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, March 28, 2022
My Flowering Almond, Prunus glandulosa, bloomed at the end of March, but it is so pretty that I wanted to include it today anyway. It is a small ornamental shrub that, despite its name, does not produce almonds.

A Bumble Bee for Saturday's Critters.
I have only a few Daffodils still blooming here in mid-April. Most of them bloomed in February and March.

My white Irises are blooming. My purple ones are still asleep!

Mayapples, Podophyllum peltatum, are native North American wildflowers that are hardy in zones 3 - 8. You might find them for sale at a garden center that carries wildflowers. I bought two plants 5 or 6 years ago, and they have multiplied.

Their tiny white flowers are hidden under the leaves.

Buckeyes - their tubular, red blooms attract Hummingbirds!

Butterweeds, Packera glabella, are wildflowers that like wet soil. We have had a lot of rain, and they are springing up everywhere in our yard. After they finish blooming, they will be mowed down. But they will be back in full force next year!

Wild Violets are happy to enjoy the rain or the sunshine, they love it all.

Another Wildflower, Spring Beauty, Claytonia virginica.

First bloom on my Azalea.

Wisteria grows so fast it is hard to control, but the butterflies love the pretty blooms.

Flowering Dogwood tree, Cornus florida.

Pink Flowering Dogwood tree, Cornus florida var. rubr.

Our Apple Tree is blooming!

Now for a look at things to come...
... buds on my double-white Clematis!
