Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday,

We have had partly cloudy skies with scattered afternoon thunderstorms this week. Children enjoyed the last few days of care-free play before school started again on Wednesday.

2. Garden Update

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 8, 2019

I have 10 'Burpless Beauty' Cucumber vines. This one will be cucumber number 50 when I pick it in a few days. I planted the cucumbers close to the tomatoes to let the vines run on the tomato cages. It worked well though I had to trim off the largest cucumber leaves to give the tomatoes more light. These tomatoes are 'Husky Cherry Red' - very good added to a lettuce-type salad. As you can see from this photo, I am having problems with stinkbugs. I killed that one, but there's always more each day.

3. Tennessee River

We enjoy watching the traffic on the Tennessee River when we eat lunch at Hagy's Catfish Hotel Restaurant. The 'City of Pittsburgh' towboat was headed north on Thursday with empty barges.

We did not see each other until I walked nearby. We were both startled at the close encounter, but I had my camera in hand and got a photo before she flew!

Harvest Monday and Our World Tuesday

My garden is very small so I was not expecting to find a lot when I went outside this morning.

I was pleasantly surprised! Husky Cherry Red tomatoes, Burpless Beauty cucumbers, Clemson Spineless okra, and...

… our figs are getting ripe. Now the race is on between us and the Raccoons!

Thankful Thursday, Little Things Thursday, and Harvest Monday

I am thankful that my cucumber vines are producing a good crop! I planted ten 'Burpless Beauty' seeds, and every seed sprouted and grew.  I am thankful to have had enough cucumbers to share with friends.

And I made pickles! I found a recipe for refrigerator pickles on the Taste of Home website. They look a little yellow because I used apple cider vinegar instead of white vinegar, but they have a very good taste!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, July 2019

I made most of these photos on Friday or Saturday, before the rain began on Saturday night. Our weather forecast is for rain to continue until mid-day on Thursday.

My Gladiolas are just about finished blooming; I think this is the last one.

Marigolds with a Gulf Fritillary Butterfly

I believe this is Hibiscus moscheutos, a native wildflower

Althea, Rose of Sharon, Hibiscus syriacus, is a large shrub (or maybe a small tree).

A double Day Lily near our driveway

Butterfly Bush, Buddleia, with its powerful aroma draws the bees and butterflies.

On Saturday I bought 3 more Geraniums for my front porch planters. I did not realize they were different colors until I got them home. The one on the left is 'Americana Cherry Rose' and the other two are 'Americana Bright Red.'

1. Crop Duster (Sky Watch Friday)

After you cross the Mississippi River from Tennessee to Arkansas, the land is very flat, perfect for farming. On the way to our family reunion, we passed many miles of fields - corn, milo (grain sorghum), soybeans, rice, and cotton. At one point a crop duster airplane was taking off from a runway next to the highway.

As soon as he was above the treetops, he began turning to the west and crossed the highway in front of us. For the weekend, we had partly cloudy skies with high temperatures in the mid-90s. Thankfully, the reunion was indoors at a community center building.

2. Garden Update

We have been picking 'Early Girl' tomatoes for about 10 days. They are smaller than I had hoped for, but very tasty with a rich tomato flavor.

This is our third cucumber from the 'Burpless Beauty' vines. They have been very good, weighing about eight ounces each.

And we might have figs unless the raccoons eat them first!

Althea, Hibiscus syriacus, common name Rose of Sharon, is a hardy ornamental shrub native to China and India. It is often grown in gardens here in the United States where it blooms from mid-Summer into Autumn.

Warm days with cool nights, blue skies, fluffy white clouds - perfect Spring weather!

2. Gardening

My tomatoes are growing taller, but so is the grass and the weeds!
That is a white Rose ('Iceberg') behind the second from right tomato plant. Most of the flowers are faded, but there are still more buds to open. And the purple on the far right is a wildflower, Spiderwort.

Only time will tell if this was a good idea or not - I planted cucumber seeds in with the tomato plants to let the cucumber vines climb the tomato cages.

And my okra is coming up. I see a few gaps; I will probably plant a few more seeds this weekend.

3. Bearded Iris (Floral Friday Fotos)

Bearded Iris gets its name from the Greek word for rainbow, and what a rainbow of colors there are!

I have only a few colors, but there are a lot of people who grow hundreds of different colors.

4. Snail (Saturday's Critters)

Large critters are easy to find and photograph, but don't overlook the small ones!

Though snails are kind of gross and slimy, I think their shells are pretty. One snail I can tolerate, but if they multiply and start eating my plants, I will not hesitate to declare war on snails!

5. Gray Catbird (I'd Rather B Birdin')

Gray Catbirds, Dumetella carolinensis, are migratory birds that spend the Winter along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of North America or in the Caribbean islands and Central America. But in the warm weather months they migrate across the United States and as far north as southern Canada to nest and raise their young.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day and My Corner of the World

'Early Girl' Indeterminate Tomato

In the vegetable garden, the tomatoes are blooming!

And the Hedges are blooming! Very invasive plants. I am constantly cutting them back and mowing down the new sprouts, but when they bloom the aroma is heavenly!

Coreopsis growing near the Butterfly Bush

My Coreopsis plants have been in a race to see who blooms first. Here's the winner!

Kerria japonica 'Pleniflora'

White Floribunda Rose 'Iceberg' (bought in October 2017)

This rose has been blooming for two weeks, and is still going strong!

Burr Rose, Rosa roxburghii

This is a Burr Rose, so named because the buds look like burrs. Another name for it is Chestnut Rose.

I think this tiny wildflower is a member of the Bellflower family.

Another wildflower - Spiderwort

Trifolium repens

And White Clover! All mixed in with the grass, we will wait until it finishes blooming before we mow.

Rieger Begonia 'Solenia' Begonia x hiemalis

I do not have much luck with Begonias, but I could not resist this color.

And to add a bit of mystery, I bought two Geraniums from the 'mixed colors' shelf. Hopefully we will know what color they are by next Bloom Day.
