A Zenaida macroura, Mourning Dove, at one of our bird feeders with a female Northern Cardinal in the background. They are ground-feeding birds; to attract them, offer sunflower seeds on the ground.

The Downy Woodpecker, Dryobates pubescens, is just one of more than 200 Woodpecker species found worldwide. Woodpeckers search for insects hiding under the bark of trees, and are known for the drumming sound they make as their bills strike the tree trunks.

You can attract them to your yard by offering suet. I made this photo through my dining room window.

U-Haul is a fleet of rental trucks and trailers operating in the United States and Canada. All their trucks and trailers feature painted scenes (murals) of historic sites.

The trucks and trailers can be rented for moving across the country or just across town. Because U-Hauls can be rented wherever a person lives and returned at a U-Haul location at their destination, we get to see many different and interesting murals.

The Tennessee River originates in eastern Tennessee and flows southwest into Alabama before turning back northwest into middle Tennessee and passing through Kentucky on its way to the Ohio River. It is 652 miles long (1,049 km). In the 1930s the Tennessee Valley Authority was given the task of building dams to produce electric power for the area. The locks and dams also improved river navigation and produced lakes that are popular recreation areas.

The point where the River very briefly touches Mississippi is about an hour's drive from my house.

R is for Raptors - birds of prey

The term raptor is derived from the Latin rapio, meaning to seize or take by force. Birds that are raptors have keen eyesight for locating their prey, strong feet with talons for gripping and killing, and powerful curved beaks for tearing flesh. Most raptors hunt and kill their prey (small animals), resorting to eating carrion (already dead animals) only when live ones are scarce.

Raptors include Eagles, Ospreys, Kites, True Hawks (Accipiter), American Hawks (Buteo, called Buzzards in Europe), Harriers, Falcons, Merlins, Owls, Caracaras, and Vultures (carrion-eating raptors).

I have a dozen or so quilts made by my husband's mother and grandmother. Here are a few.

I think this quilt was made by my husband's grandmother. I am not sure of its age, but I am thinking it was probably made in the 1970's. Her favorite color was red!

My mother-in-law made this one. She knew the names of all the patterns, but I have forgotten.

I know this one is newer than the others because it is machine-quilted.

American Persimmons, Diospyros virginiana, are harvested in the Autumn after the first frost. They can be eaten raw or cooked. But don't try to eat them early; they need the chill to sweeten them up!

After I graduated from high school, got a job, and began to save a little money, I bought myself this Opal ring. Now many years later, it will only fit on my little finger. I guess I could get it stretched. If I remember correctly, the small red stones are garnets.

N is for Northern Cardinal - a North American songbird commonly called a Redbird

Northern Cardinals are non-migratory birds found primarily in the eastern half of the United States, and also widespread across Mexico. Here in Mississippi, they are probably the first birds pointed out to young children, "Look! See the pretty Redbird!" It is only when we are older that we learn its proper name: Northern Cardinal, Cardinalis cardinalis.

Northern Cardinals eat insects, seeds, and fruit. If you live within their range, you can attract them to your yard by filling feeders with sunflower seeds and planting shrubs that produce fruit. This one is feeding in our blackberry thicket on the dried berries (really just seeds, but they seem to like them).

The Northern Mockingbird, Mimus polyglottos, is the only Mockingbird commonly found in North America. It is white underneath, and has a grey head, back, wings, and tail. A few white feathers in its wings and tail are more visible in flight. Mockingbirds are so named because of their ability in mimic other bird songs. If you think you hear a chorus of different birds, it may be just one Mockingbird!

L is for Lilium superbum - a bright orange lily whose petals curve backward

The fourth Wednesday of each month is Wildflower Wednesday at Clay and Limestone. Lilium superbum is a wildflower native to the eastern half of the United States. It has several common names: American Tiger Lily, Turk's Cap Lily, Turban Lily, Lily Royal, and Swamp Lily.

Lilium superbum rarely make seed; instead small bulbils form at the leaf axis. When planted and kept moist they will grow into new plants.

This is a juvenile Eastern Bluebird, Sialia sialis. If this is a male, the speckled feathers will be replaced by bright blue feathers as it matures. If a female, the back and wing feathers will be a lighter blue.

H is for Hummingbirds - the smallest birds in the world!

There are more than 325 Hummingbird species, all native to the Western Hemisphere. Most are tropical birds, living in Central and South America. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Archilochus colubris, is the one we see most often here in the eastern half of the United States. Only the males have red throats.

They are migratory birds, nesting and raising their young here in the Summer before returning to Mexico and the Central American countries for the Winter. For size comparison, in the background of this photo is the edge of my car's license plate.

Hummingbirds sip nectar from flowers and catch small insects. Many people attract them to their gardens by hanging Hummingbird feeders filled with sugar-water for them to drink.
