Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday, Orange You Glad It's Friday, Weekend Reflections,
and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

All of these photos were made last Saturday when we went with friends to look for Autumn leaf color.

1. Tennessee River (Sky Watch Friday)
Tennessee River in northwest Alabama, November 3, 2018
.
2. Happy Fall Y'all
Waterloo, Alabama, USA, November 3, 2018
Not only do we say y'all here in the South, we write it, too!

3. Favorite Photo of the Week (Orange You Glad It's Friday)
Waterloo, Alabama, USA, November 3, 2018
Pond Cypress trees, Taxodium ascendens, in their Autumn foliage.

4. Rock Spring Nature Trail (Weekend Reflections and Saturday's Critters)
Lauderdale County, Alabama, USA, November 3, 2018
Rock Spring Nature Trail is a short walking trail that goes up and down a hill and alongside a pond. It is on the Natchez Trace Parkway just north of the Tennessee River.

It was a pleasant walk with pretty reflections in the pond.

On the pond at Rock Spring Nature Trail, November 3, 2018
The Autumn leaves were casting a yellow reflection at the edge of the pond, and I was quite pleased to get this photo of the turtles!

5. Heron and Crow (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Waterloo, Alabama, USA, November 3, 2018
The Great Blue Heron and the Crow (Raven?) spent several minutes together under a Pond Cypress tree. Do you think maybe they were talking about the chance of rain? (It did rain the next day).

Or perhaps the Great Blue Heron was bragging about what a large fish it caught and ate about 10 minutes earlier. It is absolutely amazing how much a heron's throat can stretch to swallow a large fish! (And their stomachs are very flexible, too).

Have a wonderful day!

1. Monarch Butterfly (Orange You Glad It's Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 28, 2018
I was so excited to see a Monarch on my Butterfly Bush that I made a lot of photos!

I posted two photos on Monday, and now two more today. Don't be surprised if two or three more Monarch photos appear next week!

2. Tennessee River (Sky Watch Friday)
View of the Tennessee River from the Natchez Trace Parkway bridge in northwest Alabama, October 29, 2018
We had beautiful blue skies for our drive to Florence, Alabama, on Monday.

3. Favorite Photo of the Week
Colbert County, Alabama, USA, October 29, 2018
Great Blue Heron in late afternoon sunlight at Colbert Ferry Park on the Natchez Trace Parkway

4. Turtles (Saturday's Critters)
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, October 22, 2018
A large Softshell Turtle enjoying the sunshine, and...

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, October 27, 2018
… a few days later, a smaller Yellow-bellied Slider Turtle in the same spot!

5. Killdeer (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, October 27, 2018
Standing on one leg with the other leg tucked up under its feathers to conserve body heat

Have a wonderful day!

Willy Nilly Friday 5, Weekend Reflections, Orange You Glad It's Friday,
and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

1. Moth (Orange You Glad It's Friday)
Cecropia Silk Moth on a very dirty window with a few odd reflections! (Don't know what that reflection is sticking up next to its head). These moths are the largest of the native North American moths. Their wingspans may reach 6 inches (15cm), but this one was only about 2/3 of that size.

2. Mushrooms
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 7, 2018
The rain is bringing up the mushrooms!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 8, 2018
The same mushrooms the next day.

3. Heron (Weekend Reflections)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 10, 2018
I think the Great Blue Heron, Ardea herodias, is glad we have had enough rain to bring the water level up again. September was so dry that the pond was getting seriously low at the shallow end where he does most of his fishing.

4. Anole (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 11, 2018
A Green Anole, Anolis carolinensis, on the geraniums on my front porch. I will have to be watchful for it may try to hitch a ride into the house when I move my plants inside this weekend.

Though Green Anoles are not true chameleons, they can change from green to brown.

5. Phoebe (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 9, 2018
Eastern Phoebes, Sayornis phoebe, are easily identified by their call (phee-be, phee-be), and by their habit of wagging their tails up and down when perched. They are migratory flycatchers whose range includes most of eastern North America.

Have a wonderful day!

1. Mushrooms (Orange You Glad It's Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 7, 2018
… in my front yard

2. Cotton
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 4, 2018
When I saw the cotton picker in the field, I began to look for a place to pull off the busy four-lane highway. Just as I was safely stopped, the picker opened up to deposit a finished bale. That's called 'being in the right place at the right time!'

3. Turtle (Weekend Reflections)
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, October 7, 2018
I see this turtle sunning on the rock almost every time I drive by the pond, but as soon as I stop, Splash! into the water it goes! Finally, I managed to get one photo before 'it's gone again!'

4. Katydid (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 6, 2018
… on a pot of geraniums on my front porch

5. Egret (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, October 3, 2018
Great Egret, Ardea alba

Have a wonderful day!

and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters and I'd Rather B Birdin'

1. Clouds (Sky Watch Friday)
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, August 31, 2018
Coming home from Tupelo last Friday, I saw a Mouse in the clouds!
(My husband was driving).

2. Butterfly (Orange You Glad It's Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 31, 2018
Gulf Fritillary Butterfly on Turk's Cap.

3. Favorite Photo of the Week
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 3, 2018
Small things can cast large shadows! I think this is a Hackberry Emperor Butterfly

4. Spider (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 4, 2018

The Black and Yellow Garden Spider, Argiope aurantia, is a harmless orb-weaver spider that is common across much of North America. They are beneficial spiders, catching and eating many harmful insects

This view of the underside more clearly shows the zigzag strands in the middle of the web that is called the stabilimentum.

5. American Robin (I'd Rather B Birdin')
New Albany, Mississippi, USA, September 5, 2018
The early bird gets the worm! And she swallowed it so fast, I almost missed the photo!

Have a wonderful day!

And on Saturday, Saturday's Critters and I'd Rather B Birdin'

1. Leaf (Orange You Glad Its Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 6, 2018
The hot dry weather is beginning to affect some of our trees.

2. Warning! (Signs, Signs)
Florence, Alabama, USA, August 13, 2018
There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.

3. The Most Interesting Thing I have Seen This Week
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 12, 2018
The Giant Mayfly, Hexagenia limbate, is widespread across North America. The long tail is not a stinger; they are harmless.

I put my hand next to it to show you how small this 'Giant' is!

4. Library Cat (Saturday's Critters)
Booneville, Mississippi, USA, July 23, 2018
I saw this pretty kitty sitting on the curb of the parking lot at the library. I think it lives next-door.

5. Geese (Sky Watch Friday and I'd Rather B Birdin')
Colbert County, Alabama, USA, August 13, 2018
I was photographing the Singing River Bridge across the Tennessee River when I heard honking!

I shifted my focus to zoom in on the sky, and look! A small flock of Canada Geese!

Have a wonderful day!

Willy Nilly Friday, August 10, 2018

Willy Nilly Friday 5, Orange You Glad It's Friday,
and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin':

1. Beautiful Butterfly (Orange You Glad It's Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 29, 2018
Pearl Crescent Butterfly, Phyciodes tharos

2. The Most Unusual Thing I have Ever Found in my Yard
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 31, 2018

A Snake's Skin!

I did not want to touch it, so I did not straighten it out to measure it.

But it was 4 feet long laying the way I found it.

3. What I am Reading
"Mr. Monk and the Dirty Cop" by Lee Goldberg is about a policeman who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder, but who has an uncanny ability to solve crimes. It is based on characters from the Mr. Monk series on USA Network Television. A few weeks ago I read "Mr. Monk and the Two Assistants." I enjoyed both books.

4. Insects (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 23, 2018
A Bee on the birdbath,

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 22, 2018
a Fly on a leaf,

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 31, 2018
an Eastern Harvestman, Leiobunum vittatum (not a spider), on the Elephant Ear plant.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, July 22, 2018
and a Flower Fly on Commelina communis, a wildflower whose common name is Mouse Ears!

5. Hummingbirds (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 25, 2018
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Archilochus colubris, at one of my feeders.
