Northern Mockingbirds, Mimus polyglottos, are well-known from the southern edge of Canada across much of the United States and southward into Mexico. They are ground foragers who eat a wide variety of insects and berries. They are loved for the length and variety of their songs. If you think you hear a chorus of birds, it may be just one Mockingbird!

I found this mural at an Early Childhood Education Center in Tupelo named to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Early Childhood Education Centers prepare four year old children to start Kindergarten the next year.

Double-crested Cormorants, Nannopterum auritum, have crests like bushy eyebrows only during their breeding season. They are migratory birds who breed in the northern parts of the United States and in southern Canada.

We see them here in the southern United States when they come for their Winter vacations! They dive for fish and catch them by propelling themselves underwater with their strong legs and webbed feet. And their hooked bills help them hold on to their catch.

It was a cloudy day when we were in town. I meant to go back on a sunny day, but it has been over a month now, so here goes with the cloudy day photos.

The Bible verse on the sign is John 13:34 "Love each other as I have loved you."

Independence Day celebration

The town gets its name from an important Native American Indian: Chief Tishomingo.

The railroad was key to the early development of the town and is still important today.

The old Tishomingo Agricultural High School

The Swinging Bridge is a pedestrian bridge at Tishomingo State Park. It is supported by steel cables and yes, it does sway a bit as you walk across it.

Our figs are getting ripe!

Something, probably a rabbit, has been eating those close to the ground. Or it might have been our dog!

We pick only as much as we can eat in a couple of days because figs are fragile and do not keep well. They can be cooked and made into fig preserves, but we prefer to eat them fresh.

We are blessed to live only an hour's drive from the Tennessee River. We always enjoy going there even on cloudy days like last Sunday.

There is always something interesting to see! This is the 'H J Dupre' operated by LeBeouf Brothers Towing of Broug, Louisiana. They specialize in transporting chemicals and petroleum products.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, June 2021

What's blooming in June in my garden in the northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

My flowers like to play tricks on me by blooming in between Bloom Days - Butterfly Weed on June 3rd.

My Spiderworts have been standing up proud with masses of blooms until heavy rains last week knocked them down. But they are still blooming laying down in the grass.

Day Lilies are everywhere!

Last week I bought these lovely Dianthus plants - three pots of them! I am not sure where I am going to plant them.

Another recent purchase - Strawberry plants. I've never seen red blooming ones; my others have white blooms. No ripe berries yet, so I don't know how the taste compares to my other strawberries.

My 'Burpless Beauty' Cucumbers are blooming, and there are a few tiny cucumbers.

Bees love the blooms on the Linden Tree (aka Basswood)

My mind is really slipping - I almost forgot my Gardenia!

For foliage as pretty as a flower - Nandina! And it produces tiny white blooms in the Spring.

Now for a look at things to come

The Mulleins (wildflowers), Verbascum thapsus, are putting up bloom stalks!

I harvested my first potatoes today! From four 'Red Norland' seed potatoes, I have one pound and one ounce of new potatoes. I spaced out my plantings so I should have some more ready to harvest in about ten days. In case you think the tiny potatoes are too small to use, they will be good dropped whole and unpeeled into a pot of vegetable soup.

After being hit with snow and ice in February, the Daffodils are making a magnificent comeback!

Here are just a few of the different colors I have.

I am sorry I do not remember their names.

Hyacinth

Spring Beauty, Claytonia virginica, is a tiny wildflower whose colors range from white to dark pink.

I think this is Flowering Quince.

The Forsythia is beginning to bloom.

And one of our pear trees is blooming.

Now for a look at things to come...

My Red Buckeyes have buds! Buckeyes are shrubs native to the southeastern United States and very attractive to Hummingbirds. Last year I saw our first Hummingbird here in north Mississippi on March 28. Check this map to follow their Spring migration, and get your feeders ready for them!

Here in Mississippi we have a new state flag! Mississippi artists were invited to submit designs. Then a Flag Commission selected several designs to go on the ballot in the general election last November. And here is the winner! The Magnolia is our state tree and state flower.

It took several months to get enough flags made, but now we are beginning to see them proudly flying beneath the US flag.

Winters are cold here in northeast Mississippi with below freezing temperatures at night, but we don't often get snow. Yesterday's snow was not a big one (other parts of the state got more than we did), but very pretty as it was falling. And children were excited to get a snow day off from school!

All the European Starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, in North America are descended from 100 birds released in New York City in 1890 (Source: All About Birds). They are invasive and regarded as pests in many places, but they sure are handsome birds! This one has its non-breeding feathers. Their breeding feathers are darker and more iridescent.

This Ginkgo tree, splendid in its Autumn color, is in the Shiloh National Military Park cemetery.

Ginkgo trees are natives of China, but have been introduced to Europe and North America.

The leaves are fan-shaped.

And as they fall - a yellow carpet on the ground!
