Autumn Wildflower

Blue Mistflower, Conoclinium coelestinum, grows in the eastern part of the US from Pennsylvania to Kansas and all across the southern states from Texas to Florida - a twenty-six state area. And it may occasionally be found as far north as southern Canada.

We began the week with cool but sunny weather. A very nice day to visit Shiloh National Military Park!

The rain began Wednesday, and continued on Thursday. The skies are still overcast this morning (Friday). Saturday's forecast is for a high of 78F (25C) with partly cloudy skies.

2. Kerria (Floral Friday Fotos)

Kerria japonica 'Plentiflora' is a large, sprawling shrub. Careful pruning (after the flowers fade) is needed to keep it in a pleasing shape.

4. Praying Mantis (Saturday's Critters)

A Praying Mantis on one of my Hummingbird feeders. They eat insects, so I think it was waiting for bees to visit the feeder. I was surprised to learn that there is a larger non-native species of Mantis brought to the United States in the 1800s (to help control insects on crops) that is large enough to catch a Hummingbird! Just to be on the safe side, I noticed the Hummingbirds were visiting my other feeders, but not this one.

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

I am thankful that we are finally getting cooler weather. When the Summer temperatures are consistently in the high 90Fs, anything under 90F is a blessing! To celebrate, my husband and I walked the Rockpile Trail in northwest Alabama. It was the first time we had been out on a hike since early Summer.

At the start of the trail a bridge crosses a small stream that flows into the Tennessee River.

And there are plenty of large rocks along the Rockpile Trail!

The lower part of the trail follows an abandoned railroad track next to the river.

In a few places you can still see the old wooden railroad ties, now covered with moss.

Then the trail goes uphill, levels off for a short distance, then uphill it goes again!

We saw several kinds of wildflowers along the trail. I think these shrubs are Elderberry.

If anyone knows what this vine is, please let me know.

Mourning Doves, Zenaida macroura, are common birds across much of North America. They are ground foragers, so to attract them to your yard offer seeds in platform feeders or on the ground.

We've had a week of very pleasant Autumn temperatures and beautiful blue skies.

The butterflies have been busy getting every drop of nectar that they can find.

The bees are busy, too. I think this is one of the bees that mimic the Bumble Bee.

Two Years and Counting, October 3-4, 2013

The anniversary of my second year blogging passed by last week without my noticing it.
When I looked at my photos for the date, September 26,
I was happy to see it was the day we went to the Pumpkin Field Day In Jackson, Tennessee.

It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky

Pumpkins grow in many different shapes, sizes, and colors

Being Pumpkin Field Day, of course, there were lots of pumpkins.

But I was surprised to see how many marvelous ornamental peppers were growing there, too.

And beautiful foliage plants.

I must remember to go back in the Spring when the Iris will be blooming.
As for this week's weather, we had rain on Monday, partly cloudy skies the rest of the week,
with very pleasant temperatures.
