Sky Watch Friday

Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, April 4, 2023
We took advantage of the sunshine on Tuesday to go to Shiloh National Military Park. This area is off-limits to protect a Bald Eagle's nest. It rained the rest of the week, and more rain is in the forecast today.

Have a great weekend!

Sky Watch Friday, July 2, 2021

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, June 26, 2021
We have had light rain for a couple of days, but the day we went to Pickwick Lake was a beautiful sunny day with only a few clouds. Do you see the nesting platform out in the lake?

There are two Osprey chicks in the nest, and a parent was pulling bites off of a fish and feeding them!

Have a beautiful day!

Thankful Thursday, June 4, 2020

Thankful Thursday, Little Things Thursday, and Signs 2

Indian Mound, Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, May 31, 2020
I am thankful that we were able to visit Shiloh National Military Park on Sunday. And thankful that the restrooms were open! We parked our car and followed a short walking trail to the American Indian Mounds Historical Site. There are several mounds grouped together on a bluff high above the Tennessee River.

There are wooden steps going up to the top of the largest mound.

The information signs are showing the effects of the tremendous amount of rain we have had in the last couple of years. The illustration depicts a community gathering around an athletic field for a game of stick-ball. Archeologists date the site as being about 800 years old, but they are not sure if these Native Americans were related to the present day tribes of Choctaw and Chickasaw that still live in the area.

From the top of the mound there is a beautiful view of the Tennessee River.

It was wonderful to be outdoors and feel "normal" for a few hours!

Have a blessed day!

Pickwick Dam, January 29, 2019

Our World Tuesday, and ABC Wednesday
ABC Wednesday - D is for Dam: a barrier constructed to hold back water

Fishermen along the river walkway, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, January 27, 2019
Pickwick Dam is one of nine locks and dams on the Tennessee River that were built for flood control and to generate electricity. Most of the spillways are open now to reduce flooding from recent heavy rainfall upriver. The next dam downriver is Kentucky Dam, and then the Tennessee River flows into the Ohio River.

We often go there birdwatching. This is a Great Blue Heron perched on one of the signs warning boats of the dangerous waters near the dam. Other birds commonly seen at Pickwick are Ducks, Gulls, Coots, Geese, Grebes, Osprey, and (sometimes) White Pelicans. And once we saw a Bald Eagle!

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, January 27, 2019
On the other side of the dam, this Great Blue Heron prefers the calmer waters of Pickwick Lake. In the Summer the lake is a popular destination for boating and other water-related activities. Pickwick Dam with its lake is about an hour's drive from our house.

Have a wonderful day!

At The Lake, February 6, 2018

Our World Tuesday and All Seasons

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, February 5, 2018
What is that long black streak in the middle of Pickwick Lake?

I zoomed in on a small section of it and discovered it is a large flock of American Coots!
A birder more experienced than I estimated there to be about a 1000 birds. Coots are migratory. As Winter gives way to Spring, they will go north to nest and raise their young.

Have a wonderful day!

Saturday's Critters, I'd Rather B Birdin', and The Weekend in Black and White

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, December 3, 2017
American Coots, Fulica americana, are year-round residents from Louisiana on the Gulf of Mexico westward to California and the Pacific northwest. Coots in the eastern and central parts of the United States migrate north to Canada in the Spring to nest and raise their young.

Their large feet allow them to easily walk on marshy ground.

The Weekend in Black and White
And they look pretty good in black and white, too!

Have a great day!

Pelicans, August 2, 2017

Wild Bird Wednesday
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, July 4, 2017
Pelecanus erythrorhynchos, American White Pelicans, are large North American birds with broad wings, long necks, and large bills. They are most often seen along the coasts and on large inland lakes. They eat fish and other small aquatic animals.

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, July 10. 2017
Their black wing tips are usually seen only in flight.

Have a wonderful day!

The cotton is blooming!

We have had scorching hot days with a few late afternoon thunderstorms this week.

2. Elvis
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, July 20, 2017
This Guitar sculpture is in front of Lawhon Elementary School where Elvis attended school in the 1940s.

Nearby is a plaque in memory of Mrs. J. C. Grimes, his 5th grade teacher. Mrs. Grimes was a wonderful teacher who loved and encouraged all her students. I was blessed to have her for 5th grade in 1960.

3. Bird! (I'd Rather B Birdin')

Guess who decided to build her nest in a hanging basket on my front porch?

A Carolina Wren!

4. Shiloh National Military Park
Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, July 21, 2017
This National Park commemorates the American Civil War Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7 1862.

It is a very peaceful place to visit now 155 years later. However, a few times during the year, they celebrate special events with a cannon firing demonstration!

If you do the driving tour of the park, watch for deer!

Crows, July 26, 2017

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
C is for Corvus brachyrhynchos - American Crow

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, July 10, 2017
Crows are said to be very intelligent birds, and seeing this one, I believe it!

"American Crows are common birds of fields, open woodlands, and forests. They thrive around people, and you’ll often find them in agricultural fields, lawns, parking lots, athletic fields, roadsides, towns, and city garbage dumps." Quote from All About Birds website.

Pelican, July 15, 2017

Pickwick, Tennessee, July 4, 2017
I saw a small flock of American White Pelicans swimming in Pickwick Lake. I wonder if this one is raising its wings to cast a shadow on the water in order to better see fish close to the surface. Thanks to you Anni for that possible explanation of its behavior!

We shell peas! Last Friday I bought a bushel of purple-hull peas. Shelling them was an all-day job, but now I have plenty of peas in my freezer. When we eat them this Winter, they will taste of this Summer's sunshine!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 12, 2017
And to go with the Purple-hull Peas - Purple Okra! Very pretty, but Purple Okra turns green like regular okra when it is cooked.
