Encore Azalea, September 30, 2021

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 23, 2021
Be thankful for the little things! Today I am thankful for Encore Azaleas. They bloom in the Spring like other Azaleas, and then there is an encore performance in the Autumn! The name of this one is 'Autumn Royalty.'

It is hard to believe this is the last day of September! We have 70F and rain this morning at 8:30. Autumn weather for sure!
Have a blessed day!

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, September 26, 2021
Double-crested Cormorants, Nannopterum auritum, have crests like bushy eyebrows only during their breeding season. They are migratory birds who breed in the northern parts of the United States and in southern Canada.

We see them here in the southern United States when they come for their Winter vacations! They dive for fish and catch them by propelling themselves underwater with their strong legs and webbed feet. And their hooked bills help them hold on to their catch.

Have a wonderful day!

When I first saw this Belted Kingfisher, Megaceryle alycon, he had his back to me.

But he was very cooperative and flew over to another wire to give me a front view!

Over much of the United States, Belted Kingfishers are all year residents. In Canada and Mexico they are migratory birds. Fish are their primary source of food; look for them around ponds, lakes, and rivers.

Sometimes you can find Great Blue Herons, Ardea herodias, wading in shallow water looking for fish. But don't forget to look up in the trees, too!

A pretty place for a picnic! We began the week with nice sunny days, but we are ending it with rain.

I think the huge rocks on the river bank are more interesting in black and white.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, September 2021

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

The colors for my September's Bloom Day seem to be white and all shades of red! Where are my blue, orange, and yellow flowers? Resting? Laying dormant? Goofing off, most likely!

Hibiscus syriacus, Rose of Sharon 'Red Heart'

Another Rose of Sharon, name unknown

Encore Azalea 'Autumn Royalty'

Butterfly Bush, Buddleia

Turk's Cap

Rose 'Iceberg'

Peace Lily

Cypress Vine

Phlox

Now for the 'Pretty, but Not a Bloom' category
My Beautyberry is producing the berries that give it its name. Clusters of tiny blooms open in July, and then each flower makes a berry (food for birds). To see Beautyberry blooms visit My July Bloom Day post

For a look at things to come...
My red Spider Lilies will be blooming by this time next week!

There were several birds (Vultures, Herons, Cormorants) in this tall tree on the bank of the Tennessee River, but the Osprey, Pandion haliaetus, had pride of place at the top!

I hope you have an enjoyable day!

Tishomingo, Mississippi, USA, August 6, 2021
It was a cloudy day when we were in town. I meant to go back on a sunny day, but it has been over a month now, so here goes with the cloudy day photos.

The Bible verse on the sign is John 13:34 "Love each other as I have loved you."

Independence Day celebration

The town gets its name from an important Native American Indian: Chief Tishomingo.

The railroad was key to the early development of the town and is still important today.

The Swinging Bridge is a pedestrian bridge at Tishomingo State Park. It is supported by steel cables and yes, it does sway a bit as you walk across it.
