After eating Thanksgiving lunch with our cousins, we drove over to Pickwick to see if the Gulls and Herons were there.

Ring-Billed Gulls and Great Blue Herons

When water is being released through the spillways, the Gulls and Herons have a wonderful time fishing.

Most of the gulls we see are Ring-Billed Gulls, but there are other kinds here, too.

Decaturville TN Mural, November 23, 2015

Monday Murals, Blue Monday, and Through My Lens
Decaturville, Tennessee, USA, November 5, 2015
The diagonal streaks across this mural in downtown Decaturville are the shadows of electric power lines. The small print under the town's name declares the town was established in 1847.

Decaturville is on the Tennessee River where steamboats once carried passengers and freight up and down the river.

This small park is a very pretty place to sit and eat lunch or just enjoy the outdoors.

Hawk, November 21, 2015

Thrasher, Mississippi, USA, November 15, 2015

When we accidently drove past our destination, we turned around in a church parking lot. This hawk was sitting on the church's electric power line. Serendipity!

I'm not sure what kind of hawk it is. The most commonly seen ones here are the Red-Tailed Hawk and the Red-Shouldered Hawk.

The patterns of its feathers are so pretty!

Good Fences - Jackson TN, November 19, 2015

Good Fences, Sky Watch Friday and Signs, Signs

Jackson, Tennessee, USA, November 15, 2015

On Sunday we had pleasant temperatures and partly cloudy skies for our trip to Jackson, Tennessee. This beautiful house is near the Casey Jones Museum.

.
Jackson, Tennessee, USA

We ate lunch at the Old Country Store Restaurant. It is a family buffet-style restaurant with plenty of choices. I had ham with pineapple, black-eyed peas, white beans, okra and tomatoes, a green salad, fruit, a generous slice of cinnamon pound cake, and iced tea. It was delicious!

The clouds were moving on in as we drove home to northeast Mississippi. We had heavy thunderstorms Tuesday night, bringing 5 inches (over 12 cm) of rain. Happily, the forecast is for sunny skies this week-end.

Hope you are having a beautiful day!

Tishomingo's Swinging Bridge, November 18, 2015

ABC Wednesday, Wild Bird Wednesday, and Wednesday Waters

ABC Wednesday
S is for Suspension Bridge - a bridge that has the roadway supported by a series of wire ropes that hang from cables stretched between tall towers.
Tishomingo State Park, Mississippi, USA, September 20, 2015

This pedestrian only bridge is known as the Swinging Bridge because there is a slight movement with each footstep. The cables are anchored into the ground at each end of the bridge.

Signs are posted advising "No more than five people on the bridge at one time." The more people on the bridge, the more the bridge moves.

View of Bear Creek from the middle of the bridge.

Wild Bird Wednesday
Northern Mockingbird, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, November 5, 2015

Northern Mockingbirds are wide-spread across North America. They are great mimics of other bird's songs.

Wednesday Waters
Pinson, Tennessee, USA, November 15, 2015

Last Sunday we stopped at Pinson to see the Artesian Well. Natural spring water is supposed to have health benefits, and people bring jugs to catch the water.

My immune system is a bit low, so I did not taste it. Actually it did not look the slightest bit appealing to me. Pinson is also the site of fifteen American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds.

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

Savannah TN Mural, November 16, 2015

Savannah, Tennessee, USA, October 5, 2015

Savannah is in middle Tennessee on the banks of the Tennessee River. The American Civil War Battle of Shiloh (1862) was fought a few miles south of the town.  (The artist's name is scribbled in the lower right-hand corner, but I cannot read it).

Belted Kingfisher, November 11, 2015

ABC Wednesday, Wild Bird Wednesday, and Wednesday Waters

ABC Wednesday
R is for Responsibility - being accountable for something within one's power or control.
David Crockett State Park, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, USA, October 7, 2015

I do not understand why we have such a problem with people throwing their trash on the ground instead of putting it in a trash can.  It is a disgusting habit!  As the sign says, it's everyone's responsibility to keep our land beautiful - Please don't litter!

Wild Bird Wednesday

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, November 5, 2015

We were hoping to see Ospreys near this nesting platform, but were happy to see this female Belted Kingfisher instead. There was heavy cloud cover, so the photos are not as clear as they would be on a brighter day.

Kingfishers can be seen over most of the United States and Canada. They scan the water looking for fish and other small aquatic animals, then dive to grab their prey.

Common American Walkingstick, Diapheromera femorata, aka The Devil's Walking Stick.

Here it is with its front legs raised alongside its head and antennae, pretending to be a stick. You have to look closely to see its other legs holding onto the plant. Its head is that bump in front of my first finger. Great camouflage!

I'd Rather B Birdin'
Pickwick Lake, Tennessee, USA, November 5, 2015

On Thursday we drove north into Tennessee to look at the Autumn foliage. We stopped at Pickwick to see how many birds were at the lake. A large flock of Canada Geese sounded the alarm as soon as we got out of the car. It took them about ten minutes of loud honking before they decided we were not a danger to them. The birds in the water are Coots, and there are a few Mallard Ducks among them. The bridge over Pickwick Dam is in the background.
