Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, April 2024

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

My White Dogwood trees are full of blooms, but...

...my Pink Dogwood tree has only a few.

To me the blooms of the Sweet Shrub, Calycanthus, smell like apples.

The tubular blooms of the Buckeyes attract Hummingbirds!

Kerria japonica is a very sprawling shrub. I will trim it back after the blooms fade.

Coral Honeysuckle is another Hummingbird favorite.

This double Clematis always blooms first. Hopefully by next Bloom Day, the others will be blooming.

Mayapples, Podophyllum peltatum, are native wildflowers that grow in open woodlands in the eastern half of North America.

The umbrella-like leaves hide the small flowers underneath. I bought two plants in 2016. They multiply by underground rhizomes, and now I have about two dozen plants.

The bees are enjoying the White Clover!

Another native Wildflower, Lyre-leaf Sage, Salvia lyrata

Butterweeds have hollow stems and thrive in damp soil.

An aptly named tiny wildflower: Spring Beauty

Star of Bethlehem is an imported plant native to Europe and North Africa.

And indoors, an Amaryllis!
NOTE: It is more red than the orange color it appears to be in this photo.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, March 2024

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

I have three colors of Wild Violets.

.

These came up through the straw that I use to protect my Elephant Ears during the Winter.

Spring Snowflakes, Leucojum vernum

Most of my Daffodils bloomed halfway between Bloom Days, but I still have a few.

.

Our Pear Trees are blooming!

I know this small tree is a type of Magnolia, but I am not sure which one it is.

Flowering Almond is a small ornamental shrub.

Spirea

Kerria japonica

I am not sure that the Maple Tree seed pods qualify as blooms, but they are as pretty as any bloom I have!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 21, 2024
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Sphyrapicus varius, are migratory Woodpeckers that are here in the southeastern United States only during the Winter months. They breed in the northeastern United States and across much of Canada. This is a male; females have the red crown, but with a white throat. As their name suggests, they drill holes in trees to drink the sap, and they also eat insects. You can attract them to your yard with suet feeders.
