Thankful Thursday: Day Lily

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 16, 2024
I am thankful for Day Lilies. They are very cheerful flowers, and they give you new blooms every morning!

Have a blessed day!

I am thankful to live out in the country where the roads are lined with wildflowers!

Where the Day Lilies that escape from their flower beds to grow at the edge of the road are affectionately called Ditch Lilies!

Have a blessed day!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, July 2021

In the northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

I have several Tiger Lily plants, Lilium lancifolium, that grow so tall that they need support to stay upright, and even then, they lean over as soon as they get a chance!

The Double Day Lilies have much shorter stems and are better behaved!

A friend gave me this Stonecrop plant (Sedum) last year.

Gardenia: a sweet smelling shrub

Crepe Myrtles are tall shrubs (or small trees) and come in several colors. Shades of pink are the most popular colors in our area, but I am seeing more of the white ones today than in previous years.

Althea (Rose of Sharon): another shrub that grows to be the size of a small tree.

Encore Azalea "Autumn Royalty"

Phlox are very easy to grow, have a pleasant aroma, and give the garden a bold splash of color,

Butterfly Bush, Buddleia, blooms and provides nectar for butterflies from Summer into the Autumn months. Perhaps it was the heavy rain we had recently that damaged this one's wings.

The Beautyberry shrub, Callicarpa americana, has tiny pink blooms in the Summer that produce the bright purple berries in the Autumn that give it its name.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, June 2021

The 15th of each month is Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day hosted by Carol at May Dreams Gardens

What's blooming in June in my garden in the northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

Click on the photos to see them at their best.

My flowers like to play tricks on me by blooming in between Bloom Days - Butterfly Weed on June 3rd.

My Spiderworts have been standing up proud with masses of blooms until heavy rains last week knocked them down. But they are still blooming laying down in the grass.

Day Lilies are everywhere!

Last week I bought these lovely Dianthus plants - three pots of them! I am not sure where I am going to plant them.

Another recent purchase - Strawberry plants. I've never seen red blooming ones; my others have white blooms. No ripe berries yet, so I don't know how the taste compares to my other strawberries.

My 'Burpless Beauty' Cucumbers are blooming, and there are a few tiny cucumbers.

Bees love the blooms on the Linden Tree (aka Basswood)

My mind is really slipping - I almost forgot my Gardenia!

For foliage as pretty as a flower - Nandina! And it produces tiny white blooms in the Spring.

Now for a look at things to come

The Mulleins (wildflowers), Verbascum thapsus, are putting up bloom stalks!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, July 2019

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

I made most of these photos on Friday or Saturday, before the rain began on Saturday night. Our weather forecast is for rain to continue until mid-day on Thursday.

My Gladiolas are just about finished blooming; I think this is the last one.

Marigolds with a Gulf Fritillary Butterfly

I believe this is Hibiscus moscheutos, a native wildflower

Althea, Rose of Sharon, Hibiscus syriacus, is a large shrub (or maybe a small tree).

A double Day Lily near our driveway

Butterfly Bush, Buddleia, with its powerful aroma draws the bees and butterflies.

On Saturday I bought 3 more Geraniums for my front porch planters. I did not realize they were different colors until I got them home. The one on the left is 'Americana Cherry Rose' and the other two are 'Americana Bright Red.'

And in the Vegetable Garden:

Tomatoes,

Okra,

and Cucumbers.
