Night-blooming Cactus

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 4, 2024
I am thankful for beauty in the night. My Night-blooming Cactus bloomed last night!
I think this type of Epiphyllum is called Queen of the Night.
The blooms are large and stay open only one night. They have a strong odor that attracts night-flying insects for pollination.
Have a blessed day!

I am linking in today with Thankful Thursday at It's a Small Town Life!

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16

"Know ye that the Lord he is God; it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful unto Him and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endures to all generations" Psalm 100:3-5

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, August 2019

ABC Wednesday and Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day
F is for Flowers!

The northeastern corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

Butterfly Bush, Buddleia, attracts a swarm of butterflies, but only a few will stay still long enough for me to photograph them!

.

Spiderwort, a native wildflower I rescued from the side of the road before the highway department came along with their mowing machines.

I have a small patch of Rudbeckia, Black-eyed Susans, that I spray with an insecticidal soap to keep insects from eating the buds before they open. Why they are particularly attracted to these flowers I do not know.

Althea, Rose of Sharon 'Red Heart'

Encore Azalea 'Autumn Royalty'

The Crape Myrtles are just beginning to bloom.

I have a lot of Phlox plants, and they have been blooming for several weeks.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 9, 2019
And my Night Blooming Cactus bloomed last week.

Almost six inches (15cm) across!

3. Cactus Bloom (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 25, 2019
The Night Blooming Cactus, Epiphyllum, is a sprawling plant, but it makes up for its untidy habits by producing large blooms that open at night. My husband lit it up with a flashlight last night so I could get a good photo. The blooms are pollinated by night-flying insects, and they close up at dawn.

4. Long-legged Fly (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 9, 2019
Yes, I know that flies are pests, but when you see them up close, some of them are beautiful! And actually, the Long-legged Fly is beneficial to the garden because it eats smaller insects such as aphids, gnats, beetle larva, and smaller flies.

5. Eastern Kingbird (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Stantonville, Tennessee, USA, July 24, 2019
Eastern Kingbirds, Tyrannus tyrannus, are migratory birds we see here in North America in the Spring and Summer. They spend the Winter in South America.

Have a wonderful day!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, October 2018

The northeastern corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7

Hibiscus 'Confederate Rose'

Night-blooming Cactus, Epiphyllum

I was surprised to see a few blooms on the Kerria japonica 'Pleniflora' - I think of them as Spring flowers only.

Turk's Cap, Malvaviscus, has been a steady bloomer for months! My Hummingbirds enjoyed them this Summer, but now they have all gone south to spend the Winter.

Encore Azalea 'Autumn Royalty' blooms in the Spring and again in the Autumn. Thirty-one varieties of Encore Azaleas have been developed. They are wonderful, beautiful shrubs, and some tolerate cold weather better than others. Check the hardiness zone before you buy one.

Impatiens in a hanging basket on my front porch

My next gardening job is to get all my potted plants back inside before the first frost.

Queen of the Night, May 4, 2016

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday

ABC Wednesday
Q is for Queen of the Night
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 23, 2015
One of the names for the Night-Blooming Cactus is Queen of the Night. The blooms open at night and close with the dawn. Each bloom is open for only one night. They are pollinated by night-flying insects.

Wild Bird Wednesday
Great Blue Heron
Great Blue Heron, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA
We often see Great Blue Herons wading in the shallow water at the river's edge at Pickwick. But last Monday was the first time we have ever seen one swimming along out in the middle of the river.

After a few minutes he flapped his wings and flew away.

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

Night Blooming Cactus, October 26, 2015

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 24, 2015

One of my Night-Blooming Cacti opened up three flowers Saturday night.

The large blooms stay open for only one night, closing at dawn the next morning.

Their strong scent attracts night-flying moths and other insects for pollination, but I've never had one to make seed.  I'll soon be moving them inside to protect them from the winter weather.

Hope you have a wonderful week!

Night-Blooming Cactus, July 3, 2015

Night-Blooming Cactus, Prentiss county, Mississippi, USA, June 28, 2015

The huge flowers open for one night only and are pollinated by night-flying insects.  They begin to close at the first hint of daylight.

Here is US zone 7, Night-Blooming Cacti can live outdoors in the Summer, but must be moved indoors for the Winter.

Sometimes, if the weather is exactly right, they will bloom again in early October.
