I was surprised to see this small wildflower blooming after we have had below freezing temperatures. I do not know its name, nor the name of the insect feeding on it. The flower is about the size of a fingernail, and the insect is really tiny with yellow stripes on its tail. Any help with identification is appreciated.

Tree Following, All Seasons, Macro Monday 2, and Through My Lens

Tree Following is a fun meme! Just choose a tree and photograph it once a month to follow the changing seasons of the year.

The tree I am following was planted in the park as a memorial to a child killed in an automobile accident. I was not sure what it was (just bare branches) when I photographed it earlier in the year. But now that it has leafed out, I can be sure - a Red Maple, Acer rubrum.

We had strong thunderstorms on Saturday morning, so I thought I should go check on the tree that afternoon. It was looking very refreshed by the rain with only a few leaves blown backward.

Red stems on the young 'maple-shaped' leaves was the deciding factor in identifying it, though it gets its name from the red color of its leaves in the Autumn. And doesn't the bark look interesting! A deciduous tree, Red Maple is native to the eastern half of the United States and southeastern Canada.

Foliage Follow-up, Macro Monday 2, and Ruby Tuesday Too

The 16th of each month (the day after Gardeners' Bloom Day) is for spotlighting foliage plants.

Coleus can be grown in containers or in the ground, but they are not cold-hardy. Many leaf color combinations have been developed, giving gardeners almost any color they fancy.

They are very easy to grow, and thrive in shady areas.

To propagate Coleus cut off a few stems, put them in water, and they readily root, giving you new plants in a week or two.

Finally, okra!

My 'Clemson Spineless' okra came up just a few days after planting and grew quickly. Then suddenly, the plants stopped growing. Just stood there week after week. I tried talking to them. I told the plants I would yank them up by the roots if they did not bloom! They just ignored me. They knew I would not really do that.

Then I remembered reading something about 'whipping okra' to make it produce, so I thought
I would give it a try. I used a small stick and beat them gently around their knees, five days in a row, talking to them while I was doing it, telling them it was for their own good.

And it worked! Now I am picking a handful of pods two or three times a week, just the right amount for the two of us!

Our fig trees are so old that I don't remember the variety name. Green figs stand straight up. As they grow larger and ripen, they bend over.

Every year it is a race between us and the raccoons to see who gets the larger portion!
