Sky Watch Friday

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, May 10, 2024
We had cloudy skies for our trip to Pickwick Lock and Dam on the Tennessee River last Friday.

We enjoy watching the river traffic. Ingram Barge Company's 'John F. Secrest' was pushing its barges into the Lock on its way upstream towards Florence, Alabama.

Happy Friday!

Pickwick Dam on the Tennessee River is a hydro-electric dam that generates electricity for our area.

The dam backs up the water of the Tennessee River to form Pickwick Lake. It is a popular vacation spot on holidays and weekends, but it was very quiet and peaceful when we were there mid-week.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Thankful Thursday, June 4, 2020

Thankful Thursday, Little Things Thursday, and Signs 2

Indian Mound, Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, May 31, 2020
I am thankful that we were able to visit Shiloh National Military Park on Sunday. And thankful that the restrooms were open! We parked our car and followed a short walking trail to the American Indian Mounds Historical Site. There are several mounds grouped together on a bluff high above the Tennessee River.

There are wooden steps going up to the top of the largest mound.

The information signs are showing the effects of the tremendous amount of rain we have had in the last couple of years. The illustration depicts a community gathering around an athletic field for a game of stick-ball. Archeologists date the site as being about 800 years old, but they are not sure if these Native Americans were related to the present day tribes of Choctaw and Chickasaw that still live in the area.

From the top of the mound there is a beautiful view of the Tennessee River.

It was wonderful to be outdoors and feel "normal" for a few hours!

Have a blessed day!

1. Tennessee River (Sky Watch Friday)
Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, March 27, 2020
We have had a week of very variable weather. Warm, partly-cloudy days followed by rain and colder temperatures. Then cold and sunny!

The 'American Valor' out of Jeffersonville, Indiana, was pushing its barges downstream when we walked along the shore of the Tennessee River last Friday.

2. Signs of Spring: Pokeweed (Poke Sallet, Poke Salad)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 2, 2020
American Pokeweed, Phytolacca americana, returns from the root. The large dried stems are from last year.

3. Redbud (Floral Friday Fotos)

Eastern Redbud, Cercis canadensis, is a small tree native to the eastern United States.

Clusters of blooms appear in the Spring before the leaves unfurl.
It may be seen growing wild, and it is sold in garden centers as an ornamental for home landscaping.

We did not see the young eaglets, but were happy to be able to photograph one of the parents.

I hope you have a good day!

1. Rain (Sky Watch Friday)
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, March 24, 2020
All the streams and creeks are near to overflowing; we had 5 inches (12cm) of rain this week!

2. Good Food!
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, March 15, 2020
At Olive Garden: Zoodles! Spiralized Zucchini, with other vegetables and grilled chicken in a creamy sauce. It was very good! And I am glad we went there before the 'shut down the restaurants' order came. They have relaxed the rules a little bit now to allow carry-out (to-go) food.

3. Kerria (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, March 21, 2020
Kerria japonica is a sprawling shrub that I will cut back as soon as the blooms fade.
(I trim them back enough that they don't block my garden path).

4. My dog, Miss B (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, March 25, 2020
I know one girl who is happy about the 'stay at home' order - my dog!
And did you know that having a pet to love and care for helps relieve stress?

5. Grackle (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, March 15, 2020
Common Grackles, Quiscalus quiscula, live in the eastern half of the continent. The northernmost birds come south to spend the Winter and return to Canada in the Spring.

Hope you are safe and healthy!

Tennessee River, November 19, 2019

ABC Wednesday and Our World Tuesday
T is for the Tennessee River

Click on the photo to see it at its best.

Hardin County, Tennessee, USA, November 19, 2019
The Tennessee River originates in eastern Tennessee and flows southwest into Alabama before turning back northwest into middle Tennessee and passing through Kentucky on its way to the Ohio River. It is 652 miles long (1,049 km). In the 1930s the Tennessee Valley Authority was given the task of building dams to produce electric power for the area. The locks and dams also improved river navigation and produced lakes that are popular recreation areas.

The point where the River very briefly touches Mississippi is about an hour's drive from my house.

Have a wonderful day!

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Lauderdale County, Alabama, USA, November 3, 2018
I am thankful for warm, sunny days that somehow wriggle their way in between the cold, rainy days of November. Last Saturday was one!
(Don't worry; my husband was driving).

Tennessee River, Lauderdale County, Alabama, USA, November 3, 2018
Days when the morning fog lifts, and the sun brings a sparkle to ponds, lakes, and rivers!
(I was amazed at the amount of sparkle on the water - almost like ice).

Days when the sunshine highlights the Autumn colors!

Birds! April 12, 2018

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Colbert County, Alabama, USA, April 5, 2018
Today I am thankful that we had a wonderful afternoon along the Tennessee River last Thursday! As we walked along the shore near Wilson Dam, we were astonished at the number of birds we saw there.

Pelican, Gulls, Grebes, Coots, Cormorants!

.

And my favorite bird - the Great Blue Heron!

It was a wonderful experience, and I am thankful for it.

I hope you have a beautiful day!

and on Saturday: Saturday's Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

1. Our Country Mourns
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, February 15, 2018
Flags are at half-staff for the 17 who died in the Florida school shootings on February 14th.

2. Wildlife (Sky Watch Friday)
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, February 9, 2018
When we were at Pickwick Dam on the Tennessee River last Friday, the skies were quickly becoming overcast. The spillways were open, and hundreds of Gulls were there catching fish.

Fish coming through the spillways are near the top of the water. The Gulls try to grab them before they can swim deeper.

3. The Most Interesting Thing I have Seen This Week
Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, February 9, 2018
We wondered why the John F. Secrest with its barges was stopped at the far shore of the Tennessee River. It wasn't long before the mystery was solved.

The Addi Belle came around the bend from the other direction.

Though they are called Tugboats or Towboats, actually they push the barges.

As soon as the Addi Belle passed on its way downstream, the John F. Secrest reversed away from the shore and maneuvered its barges back into the middle of the river.

And there it goes!

The John F Secrest is owned by Ingram Barge Company, and the Addi Belle is owned by Tennessee Valley Towing.

4. Beautiful Cat (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 6, 2018
Our neighbor's cat is so fuzzy and fluffy it is not easy to get a clear photo. The brown horizontal fluff is its tail wrapped around its front feet. Its legs are light brown, and all that white is chest, neck, sides, and hips! I think it must be a Persian mixed with Siamese.

5. Favorite Photo of the Week (I'd Rather B Birdin' and Weekend Reflections)
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, February 11, 2018
If you are a regular visitor, you already know that Great Blue Herons are my favorite birds!
