Willy Nilly Friday, November 23, 2018

Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday,
and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

1. Thanksgiving Day (Sky Watch Friday)
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, November 22, 2018
We had pleasant temperatures and beautiful blue skies on Thursday.

2. Good Food!
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, November 22, 2018
In September I sowed lettuce seeds in large plastic tubs. Since our nighttime temperatures began to drop below freezing, I have covered them each night. Now I am picking home-grown lettuce - in November!

3. Animal Shelter
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, November 7, 2018
The Tupelo-Lee County Humane Society recently moved into their new building.

It includes a clinic where the animals can be spayed or neutered before they are adopted.

4. Camouflage (Saturday's Critters)

Tishomingo County, Mississippi, USA, November 5, 2018
A pony trying to hide from my camera!

5. Eagle (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Pickwick, Tennessee, November 5, 2018
Because of the mottled brown and white feathers on its back and its dark beak, I think this is a juvenile Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus.

The young Bald Eagles do not have the white head and tail feathers of the adults until they are about five years old.

Have a wonderful day!

Lettuce! November 12, 2018

Harvest Monday and Through My Lens

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, November 9, 2018
I planted Black-seeded Simpson Lettuce in September to see if it would grow here in north Mississippi in the Autumn. Yes, it will! I planted the seeds in large tubs to make it easier to protect the plants from frost.

When the weather forecast for last Friday night was for below freezing temperatures, I picked most of the leaves, and covered the plants by draping a thick layer of old towels over the tops of the tubs.

Some of the lettuce leaves went on ham sandwiches for Saturday's lunch, and I used the rest to make salads on Sunday night.

We have rain today, so the lettuce plants are uncovered, getting a good drink of water. By covering them on the colder nights, I hope to get another picking or two of lettuce - in November!

Have a wonderful week!

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Black-seeded Simpson Lettuce, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 27, 2018
I am thankful for a slow, drizzling rain - very good for my lettuce!

I sowed lettuce seeds in September, but the weather was so hot and dry that they barely grew. But now with rain, I am more hopeful of picking my own lettuce for my salads. I am growing them in large plastic tubs to make it easier to cover them for protection from frost.

Have a blessed day!

and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

1. We Need Rain (Sky Watch Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 12, 2018
Some parts of the world are getting too much rain, but we are not getting enough. I have noticed that the water levels are getting low on a lot of the small ponds. All the mud you see here is usually underwater. However, our temperatures are cooler now, and we are thankful for that.

NOTE: Please keep those in the path of Hurricane Florence in your thoughts and prayers.

2. Fall Gardening
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 11, 2018
The cooler weather makes me want to plant something! On Tuesday I sowed seeds for 'Black Seeded Simpson' Lettuce. It is a leafy lettuce that can be picked a few leaves at a time. It will continue to make new leaves until the cold weather kills it. I planted it in tubs so it will be easy to cover for protection against an early frost.

3. Moth (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 31, 2018
Hummingbird Clearwing Moth, Hemaris thysbe. Despite wing damage, it was flying just fine.

4. Morning Glory Vine (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 11, 2018

Common Morning Glory, Ipomoea purpurea. According to Wikipedia, there are over 1,000 species of Morning Glory worldwide.

5. Hummingbird (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 28, 2018

I think this is a juvenile Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Most of our Hummingbirds have started their journey south. I expect they will all be gone by the first of October, but we will keep the feeders up awhile longer just in case a few stragglers come by.

Have a wonderful day!

and on Saturday, I'd Rather B Birdin' and Saturday's Critters

1. Early Morning Fog (Sky Watch Friday)
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, August 26, 2018
We decided to go out for breakfast early on Sunday morning. It was very refreshing to be out at daybreak while most people were still sleeping!

There is an old bit of weather lore that says 'Fog in August, snow in December.' You may live where there is always snow in December, but here in the south, we may go several years without any snow at all. I will let you know if the predicted snow comes our way!

2. American Goldfinch (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 11, 2018
Many song birds are beginning to molt, making them look at bit scruffy.

3. The Last of the Tomatoes
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 24, 2018
For about six weeks we have been enjoying tomato sandwiches every day - a good yield from only four tomato plants! But now, it is time to let the tomato worms have the rest. Did you know that tomato worms are the caterpillar stage of Sphinx Moths?

For more information on Sphinx Moths: Sphinx Moths, the Stars of the Evening

4. Cicada (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 19, 2018
Possibly the ugliest critter you will ever see! A cicada just emerged from its shell

5. Stonecrop (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 28, 2018
'Munstead Red' Stonecrop, Sedum telephium, is a late-Summer blooming perennial that grows in full sun or part-shade. Though this one is more pink than the red shown on the plant tag, I think it is a beautiful color, and I am pleased to have it in my garden!

Harvest Monday, Through My Lens, and Our World Tuesday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 6, 2018
We are getting a few handfuls of figs from our trees. The birds, squirrels, and raccoons are getting more than their fair share!

'Super Fantastic' Tomatoes, August 6, 2018

Harvest Monday, Our World Tuesday, and Ruby Tuesday Too

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 7, 2018
I bought a 'Super Fantastic' tomato as a young plant on May 7th. Be honest now, and tell me the truth. Could you just walk away from a handsome tomato plant with such a promising name?

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 25, 2018
It is an indeterminate type tomato, and the label says: Height 6 to 9 feet. Here it is seven weeks later, and taller than I am. (The tomato plant on the left is a 'Better Boy').

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 31, 2018
I had a bit of trouble with blossom-end rot, so it was not until July 21 that we were able to get tomatoes from it. The 'Super Fantastic' tomatoes are firm and nicely shaped, and only a little smaller than the predicted size of 10 ounces.

"Super Fantastic' are very good sliced for tomato sandwiches!

Have a wonderful week!

Strawberries, May 22, 2018

Our World Tuesday, and Ruby Tuesday Too

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 19, 2018
Last year I bought a few strawberry plants and set them out in one of my flower beds.

Now I am picking a few ripe strawberries each day - a small, but delicious, harvest!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 5, 2018
Today I am thankful my strawberry plants came through the winter just fine and are producing strawberries again!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 15, 2018
I eat a few with my cereal each morning. You can't get berries any fresher than this!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day May 2018

Northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7
After a very cold Spring, it feels like we have jumped from Winter straight into Summer!
Today's forecast: high 93F (33C) with an afternoon thunderstorm.

I recently bought a six-pack of mixed color Dianthus to brighten up a corner.

A miniature Gladiolus

All Roses are beautiful, but my favorite is this old-fashioned Burr Rose, Rosa roxburghii.

My red climbing Rose has reached the top of its trellis and says, 'Where to now?'

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 1, 2018
And then there is this beauty that bloomed on May 1, halfway between Bloom Day posts. As you can see, I am having a battle with vines that are invading my flower beds.

Iris

Kerria japonica 'Pleniflora' is an unruly shrub that I have to trim back a bit after it blooms. And how much trimming is 'a bit'? you ask. I cut it back enough that I can walk along the pathway without having to fight it off!

My Snowball Bush is reaching for the sky!

In the vegetable garden I added Marigolds as companion plants for my tomatoes.

Also in my garden spot, my Green Peas are blooming. I planted them early, but the Spring has been so cold that they were slow getting started.

And my Wild Blackberry thicket is full of blooms! I am hoping for blackberry pies this Summer.

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

When trying to comment I sometimes get an 'Invalid Security Token' message. Is anyone else having this problem? Do you know a solution for it?
