Mayapples

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 6, 2023
I am thankful to see wildflowers blooming!
These are Mayapples, Podophyllum peltatum, a native woodland plant of the eastern half of North America.

They bloom where the two leaves join the main stem. Beautiful even in the rain!
Plants with only one leaf do not bloom.

Have a great day!

Willy Nilly Friday, May 29, 2020

Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday, Wildflower Wednesday,
and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Click on photos to see them at their best.

1. Wide Open Spaces (Sky Watch Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 27, 2020
Some days I have to just get out of the house and drive around a bit to make sure the world is still out there! I stopped my car on a bridge (there was no traffic) to get this photo. It had rained earlier in the day.

2. Butterfly Weed (Wildflower Wednesday)
The 4th Wednesday of each month is Wildflower Wednesday. (It was the 27th this month).
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 28, 2020
Butterfly Weed, Ascepias tuberosa, is the prettiest 'weed' you will ever see! It lives up to its name attracting butterflies, and it is a host plant for the Monarch Butterfly.

3. Garden Update
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 28, 2020
My friend Jan gave me these tomato and pepper plants. The pepper plants had no label on them, and she grew the tomato plants from the seeds of a store-bought tomato. So now I have a bit of mystery in my garden, no-name tomatoes and no-name peppers!

4. Butterfly (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 28, 2020
American Lady Butterfly, Vanessa virginiensis, on Butterfly Bush, Buddleia.

5. Canada Geese (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, May 26, 2020
Mama with babies; Papa was standing guard a little ways off to the side.

Canada Geese, Branta canadensis.

Have a wonderful day!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, April 2020

Our World Tuesday and Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day
Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day is the 15th of each month.

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

My Encore Azalea 'Autumn Royalty' blooms in the Spring, and then there is a repeat performance in the Autumn. This Spring it is totally covered with blooms!

Pink Dogwoods are small trees that bloom in the Spring, and produce berries for the birds in the Autumn.

Most of our Narcissus have finished blooming, but I have a clump of late-blooming ones.

Butterweed, Packera glabella, is a wildflower that can spread quickly and become a nuisance, but isn't it a wonderful cheerful color?

Kerria japonica 'Multiflora' is past its peak bloom time, but still pretty.

A shrub native to the southeastern United States, Red Buckeye, Aesculus pavia, has tubular red blooms that attract Hummingbirds. And it has been grown successfully outside of its native range.

A wildflower I rescued from the side of the road: Spiderwort.

My red climbing rose is blooming!

I have two Clematis vines. This purple one that is just beginning to open its buds and...

… a double white Clematis that is in full bloom.

And now a couple of non-blooming garden photos...

Beautyberry, Callicarpa americana, has tiny pink blooms in early Summer, followed by purple berries to add color to the Autumn garden.

The Black and Yellow Garden Spiders, Argiope aurantia, are welcome in my garden. They do not bite people, and they catch and eat the insects that like to munch on my plants!

Spring Beauties, February 28, 2018

Wildflower Wednesday is the 4th Wednesday of each month.
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 19, 2018
Claytonia virginica, Spring Beauty, is usually the first wildflower I see here in northeast Mississippi each year. They are only 4 or 5 inches tall, and the pretty little blooms are about the size of your thumbnail. They are native Wildflowers in eastern North America, and their botanical name honors Virginia botanist John Clayton (1694 - 1773).

Happy Wildflower Wednesday!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day May 2017

Northeast Mississippi, USA zone 7

First of all I want to say that when you are planning what you would like to have in your garden, don't forget to include...
Brown Thrasher, May 13, 2017
...birdsong!   Put out the feeders; they will come!

Now on to the flowers

Burr rose

A climbing rose with clusters of small blooms

Snapdragons

Marigolds

This beauty came from a packet of mixed wildflower seeds. I have two plants with 10 or 12 blooms on each one.

Geranium

Honeysuckle

And for Foliage Follow-up Day tomorrow the 16th...

Buds on the Nandina! Colorful foliage all year and it blooms, too. What more could you want?
