Turkey Vultures, Cathartes aura, are part of nature's clean-up crew. They are the most common vulture in the Americas, ranging from southern Canada in North America to the southern tip of Chile in South America. Some of the Turkey Vultures in North America are migratory birds, but the others are year-round residents.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 21, 2024
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Sphyrapicus varius, are migratory Woodpeckers that are here in the southeastern United States only during the Winter months. They breed in the northeastern United States and across much of Canada. This is a male; females have the red crown, but with a white throat. As their name suggests, they drill holes in trees to drink the sap, and they also eat insects. You can attract them to your yard with suet feeders.

I hope you are having a great week!

Bluebird (from my archives)

My Corner of the World and Wild Bird Wednesday

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, January 6, 2023
We have had very cold weather with snow and sleet on the ground for a week. Higher temperatures yesterday and rain has melted the snow, and it is still raining today. To find a bird photo for today, I looked at photos from January of last year and found this male Eastern Bluebird, Sialia sialis, on a fence post looking for something to eat.
I hope you are having a good week!

Carolina Wrens, Thryothorus ludovicianus, are common here where I live in the southeastern part of the United States. Their primary food sources are insects and spiders, and they will come to suet feeders in cold weather.

the view from our porch down our driveway to the road this morning (1/16/2024)
We had snow Sunday night, but then it turned to sleet for most of the day Monday. It looks like snow, but it is really ice! Very slick, very dangerous. And with below freezing temperatures for the next few days, it will be the weekend before it melts and it is safe to get out again.

I hope you have a good week!
