Thankful Thursday: Book Club

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 9, 2024
I am thankful for my friends in our book club. There are 12 of us that meet once a month for food, fellowship, and book discussion. This month we are reading "The Seeds of Change" by Lauraine Snelling with Kiersti Giron. It is about a family in Ohio in 1865 that decides to join a wagon train to move farther west.

I have not read any books by this author before so I am happy to find a new author. Have you read any of her books?
Have a blessed day!

Blind Date with a Book

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 14, 2024
To celebrate Valentine's Day the library wrapped books in red paper, wrote a description and the barcode on the front, and offered them for checkout sight unseen. A blind date with a book!
What book lover could resist? Not me!

I unwrapped it this morning - "Bittersweet" by Colleen McCullough. Set in Australia in the early 1900s, it is a story about four sisters as each one follows her dreams and ambitions. Sounds good to me!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Thankful Thursday

I am thankful for the ladies in our Book Club! Some of us have known each other for years; others are new friends. We met Monday to discuss "The Street Lawyer" by John Grisham. It was about the legal problems of homeless people, and those who try to help them. It grabbed our attention from the first and held it all the way through!

Have a blessed day!

Thankful Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 18, 2024
I am thankful that my pantry shelves were full - no need to rush to the grocery store before the winter storm.
I am thankful we had more propane added to our tank last week - no worry about not being warm enough.
I am thankful that the electric power stayed on - the snow and sleet did not cause trees to fall on the lines.
I am thankful that I have 10 books checked out from the library, and thankful for the extra time to read!

Have a blessed day!

Bicycle Mural

New Albany Mississippi, USA, October 16, 2023
Artist Katie Sappington painted this mural on the side of the Tallahatchie Gourmet to draw attention to the nearby Tanglefoot Trail.

It is a popular walking, hiking, and bicycling trail that was created by paving over an abandoned railroad track. And just down the street at the library you can borrow a bicycle for the day!

Have a great day!

Books

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 28, 2023
I am thankful for books and Libraries! I borrowed these three on Monday: "Big Lies in a Small Town" by Diane Chamberlain, "A Week in Winter" by Maeve Binchy, and "Nantucket Sisters" by Nancy Thayer. I worked 22 years in a library, but had no time to read. Now that I am retired, I am reading a lot. As someone said, "So many books, so little time!"

Have a blessed day!

Death by Beach Read by Eva Gates
The Little Women Letters by Gabrielle Donnelly
Thistles and Thieves by Molly MacRae
The Pawful Truth by Miranda James

I have read other books by Miranda James and Fannie Flagg, but the other authors are new to me.
What do you like to read?

Monday Mural

Saltillo, Mississippi, USA, May 21, 2023
This is the first mural I have seen that turns a corner! Artist McKinnon Herring painted it at the rear entrance of the Teachers Resource Center. Because of traffic on the street in front, most people use this entrance.

Does it remind you of the "Yellow Submarine" song by the Beatles?

Because the Center offers tutoring for young children, she used the book "Pete the Cat: Scuba-Cat" as her inspiration for this wall.
I hope you have a fun week!

Friday's Fave Five, October 1, 2021

1. October
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 1, 2021
October is my favorite month of the year! The Summer's heat is gone, and Winter is not here yet.
I especially like this calendar from Blue Letter Bible. Each month has a nice photo, a Bible Verse, and at the bottom of the page, a brief devotional on the scripture.
"For the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." Hebrews 4:12

2. Book Club
Our book club selection for October is 'Heart and Soul' by Maeve Binchy. Last month we read 'At Home in Mitford' by Jan Karon.

3. Senior Citizen's Bingo
I'm a winner! About a dozen of us older folks get together once or twice a month to play Bingo just for fun and fellowship. We moved the tables farther apart, and we all wear masks. There is no charge to play, but those who want to can donate small prizes. On Wednesday I won a box of cheese crackers! They are very thin and crispy - a tasty snack.

4. Fresh Fruit
They say "An apple a day keeps the doctor away!" but I prefer oranges.

5. Living with Diabetes
I am especially thankful for food made especially to help us diabetics control our blood sugar! I pour chocolate Boost on my morning cereal instead of milk.

Have a blessed day and a wonderful weekend!

My Morning Glory Bush, Ipomoea fistulosa, bloomed in October and November, but I forgot to post a photo!

4. What I am Reading
I like detective stories and I like animal stories, so how could I resist "The Highly Effective Detective Goes to the Dogs" by Richard Yancey? And of course, I have to read the first book "The Highly Effective Detective" first. I am reading more books than usual this year. Are you reading more?

5. Spider (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 14, 2020
I went back to October to find a critter for today - a spider eating lunch.

1. Pickwick Lake (Sky Watch Friday)

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, October 2, 2020
We had beautiful weather for our trip to Pickwick Lake last Friday (Oct 2). But this Friday, October 9, is completely different. We have rain coming in ahead of Hurricane Delta that is bringing dangerous weather to the Gulf Coast. Thankfully, we are far enough inland that rain is all that is predicted for us.

2. Wildflowers (The Weekend in Black and White)

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 30, 2020
I sat down on the ground to make the flowers seem taller!

3. What I am Reading

1. Hot Summer Days (Sky Watch Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 30, 2020
On hot Summer days we have two choices: stay inside near the air conditioner, or find a shady place near a lake with a cool breeze blowing!

2. Phlox (Floral Friday Fotos)
Black Swallowtail Butterfly, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 30, 2020
Phlox blooms are a magnet for Butterflies!

3. What I am Reading
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 31, 2020

I read the first of Jill Churchill's Grace and Favor Mystery series, 'Anything Goes,' several months ago. On a recent trip to the library I picked up more of them. The setting is New York during the early 1930's. You should read 'Anything Goes' first to get the background info, and then the others can be read in any order.

4. Deer (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 21, 2020
a White-tailed Deer at the edge of my neighbor's yard, just seconds before it bounded back into the woods

5. Towhee (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 13, 2020
I see Towhees feeding on dropped seed under my feeders, but they are so camera-shy I rarely get a photo. And I almost didn't get this one!

Thankful Thursday, July 23, 2020

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 23, 2020
I am thankful that our library is offering curbside service!

I login to the library website using my library card number and reserve the books I want to read. When they are ready for pickup, the librarian calls me. When I drive up to the library, I call her, put the passenger side window down, and she sets my books on the front seat.

This week I got four murder mysteries by Katherine Hall Page, and another mystery by Jill Churchill.

Books are returned through the book drop slot and kept in quarantine for a week before they are available for checkout again.

Have a blessed day!

1. Clouds (Sky Watch Friday)
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, June 17, 2020
We have had beautiful blue skies this week with fluffy white clouds.

The crop in the field is Winter Wheat, ready for harvesting. Then the farmer will probably plant soybeans (to be harvested in November).

2. Babies on the Porch!
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 11, 2020
I have been very careful when watering one of the hanging baskets on my porch.

A pair of Carolina Wrens raised their babies there!
I saw two, but could get a photo of only one.
Now that they have flown, I can stop just misting the plant and give it a really good drink of water!

3. What I am Reading
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 19, 2020
I am enjoying the Secrets of Wayfarers Inn series of books.

A brief summary from the back of the first book "Family Secrets."

4. Anole (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 10, 2020
I found a Green Anole, Anolis carolinensis, enjoying its insect lunch in a flower pot on my porch!

5. Green Heron (I'd Rather B Birdin' and Weekend Reflections)
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, June 15, 2020
a Green Heron, Butorides virescens,...

stalking its prey, and then suddenly...
