The bright red seed capsules of
Euonymus americanus burst open in the Autumn giving this shrub its common name: Hearts-a-burstin'. It grows to be 4 to 6 feet tall, and is native to the eastern United States. It may be found growing in shady areas with moist soil in USDA zones 5 - 9. Deer eat the stems and leaves; birds enjoy the seeds.
Have a wonderful day!
