September was hot, October was pleasant, November is cold!

Last week's blooms on Encore Azalea |
For November's Bloom Day, I had planned to show off my Encore Azalea, but over the weekend our nighttime temperatures dropped below freezing. The shrub itself is fine, but the blooms are no more.

So to make myself feel better, I bought an Amaryllis Bulb Kit complete with large bulb, potting medium, and a pot. The directions say to soak the potting medium in warm water so that it swells to fill the pot, then plant the bulb. Blooms in 4 to 6 weeks. Maybe I will be showing its blooms for our next Bloom Day!
And if you think you cannot participate in Bloom Day in the Winter, go buy yourself a blooming houseplant, and join in the fun even when it is freezing cold outside!
Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

...Amaryllis are such interesting flowers.
ReplyDeleteI have an azalea that put out some blooms this fall too. They are toast now. The odd thing is I didn't think it was a repeat bloomer. I haven't had much luck with azaleas but this one has taken. This is its second winter here. The leaves turn a deep dark green with red twinges. I hope your amarylis grows and blooms. Happy GBBD.
ReplyDeleteHello, the azalea blooms are beautiful. Good luck with the amaryllis bulb, they are pretty flowers. Enjoy your day, have a great weekend ahead!
ReplyDeleteSorry that the freezing temperatures took your azalea flowers but your amaryllis will do wonders to cheer you! Isn't it fun to watch those bloom spikes grow so quickly?
ReplyDeleteI also got an Amaryllis bulb and it is blooming. They are fun to watch grow because they do it right before your eyes.

I do love Encore azaleas and really must find a spot for one in my garden. The 'Red Lion' amaryllis is one I've grown several times for the holidays and many of them now bloom in my garden beds in early spring. It's a great plant.
ReplyDeleteI used to grow amaryllis too, but then got one of my cats. No house plants within his reach, and he has a pretty long reach!
ReplyDeleteThere were azaleas in containers here when I moved in. A few winters in an extra cold night got them completely. I don't try anymore, they aren't really for my zone.
It has been a cold month here too. I still have some geraniums blooming but that is it!
ReplyDeleteTwo neat images Lea, and your Amaryllis will be beautiful!
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love amaryllis, I have tried to rebloom them numerous times and have only succeeded once. To me, throwing the bulb away after one blooming is a shame. Strange, isn't it. You did have a lovely azalea, though!
ReplyDeleteI had similar plans and just went with the pictures I took this weekend pre-freeze. Can't wait to see your Amaryllis.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flowers!
ReplyDeleteHere we have cold temperatures and snow.
The Azalea is beautiful, Lea! I'm sorry the flowers are no more but I'm sure your Amaryllis will deliver joy soon.
ReplyDeleteGood advice! I have about 4-5 months worth of nothing blooming outside, so I frequently post about indoor blooms. They are just as treasured. Enjoy the excitement of watching your Amaryllis grow and bloom!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your visit Lea. No wonder you specifically mentioned the hippeastrum, i am trying to collect them but more of the species as the hybrids easily gets virus especially in the hot tropics like ours. I am a hoya and hippeastrum addict, hehe.
