N is for Northern Cardinal - a North American songbird commonly called a Redbird
|
male Northern Cardinal, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 7, 2019 |
Northern Cardinals are non-migratory birds found primarily in the eastern half of the United States, and also widespread across Mexico. Here in Mississippi, they are probably the first birds pointed out to young children, "Look! See the pretty Redbird!" It is only when we are older that we learn its proper name: Northern Cardinal,
Cardinalis cardinalis.

Northern Cardinals eat insects, seeds, and fruit. If you live within their range, you can attract them to your yard by filling feeders with sunflower seeds and planting shrubs that produce fruit. This one is feeding in our blackberry thicket on the dried berries (really just seeds, but they seem to like them).
Have a wonderful day!
