Ground Hog - Treed! May 9, 2015

Our dog was barking down in the woods and would not come back to the house. We went to see what all the fuss was about.  She had a Ground Hog treed!

Prentiss county, Mississippi, May 7, 2015

According to Wikipedia, Ground Hogs, Marmota monax, are the largest rodents in the Squirrel family. They live in underground burrows, but can easily climb trees and are good swimmers.  We brought the dog back to the house and tied her to let the Ground Hog escape.  Looking at those claws and teeth, we did not want her getting into a fight with it.

Hope you have a wonderful week-end!

  5. I remember often seeing these guys in the woods around my parents' house, but I had never given any thought to their climbing abilities. Interesting.

  8. Interesting photo of the ground hog, I didn't realize they were a type of Marmot. That makes sense. I think my sister in NY has problems with them, I'm glad I don't.

  9. Ha! I had no idea that ground hogs could climb! Thanks for the info. I don't think we have ground hogs in TX (at least in my area), but still fun tid bits to know.

  11. I've never seen one in the trees. Always they seem to have a burrow to run into. I guess your dog caught on before it could get to one!

  15. I never knew what a ground hog looked like either - we don't have them in the UK - so I have learnt something new. Cute but, no, I wouldn't want to tangle with those claws and teeth either!

  17. Oh, how funny. I had heard they could climb trees, but have only ever seen them on solid ground.
