Cicadas, May 23, 2015

Cicada on Thistle, Prentiss county, Mississippi, USA

When Cicadas emerge from the ground they climb the nearest thing to shed their shells, but I was surprised to see one on a thorny thistle plant.

We have hundreds of the 13-year Cicadas this year. Their mating calls are loud and continuous. Very annoying, but it is only for a few weeks.

Have a great week-end!

  4. They are amazing critters. All those years underground!

I remember when I was little, our cats used to bring them inside during the periodic swarms.

  11. Hi Lea,
Remarkable photo and statistics on the age - 13 years, eh?
I love the first photo, the close-up work is very nicely done.
The second photo, while irrational, gives me the creeps :)
    Thanks for visiting my site.
Have a Great Memorial Day Weekend!
    Peace :)

  12. The adult cicada has such gorgeous colors with the blue body and red eyes, and golden wings. I remember seeing the empty cicada shells left on buildings, and all the noise at night.
