Geese with Goslings, May 30, 2015

Canada Geese on the campus of Itawamba Community College, Tupelo, Mississippi, USA
This small flock has adapted to life in town, and they stay here all year.

When students are on campus the geese stay on or near the pond.  But when classes are not in session, they wander around enjoying the green lawns.

They are very wary of people, but not as wild as migratory geese.

Have a wonderful week-end!

Sky Watch Friday, May 29, 2015

Intersection of US Highway 78 and The Natchez Trace Parkway near Tupelo, Mississippi, USA

Sunday's clouds brought almost 5 inches (12cm) of rain on Monday.  Then on Wednesday we got 2 inches (5 cm) more. On Tuesday and Thursday the rain was limited to drizzles, sprinkles, and light showers. The forecast for the week-end: more rain.  But thankfully we have not had the terrible flooding that some people have endured.

All that rain made me a little bit crazy - I went on a shopping spree!  From head to toe: got my hair cut, ordered new eyeglasses (frames and lens), bought two dresses, a light sweater, underwear, and a pair of shoes.  If we get sunny weather next week, I'll be back to my normal, conservative, money-saving self.

Have a wonderful week-end!

Wildflower Wednesday - Seeds, May 27, 2015

.
The Booneville, MS Public Library was giving away free seed packets.  Free seeds! - They didn't have to ask me twice.  This mixture contains seeds for sunflowers, lupines, zinnias, coneflowers, California poppies, butterfly weed, black-eyed Susan, bergamot, blue tansy, white sweet alyssum, blue flax, scarlet flax, Indian blanket flower, baby's breath, marigold, asters, cosmos, coreopsis, and larkspur. Enough seeds to create a small wildflower garden!

The back of the seed packet explains how important it is to provide habitat for birds, bees, and butterflies: "Every third bite of food we eat is due to pollinators."

Happy Wildflower Wednesday!

Cicadas, May 23, 2015

Cicada on Thistle, Prentiss county, Mississippi, USA

When Cicadas emerge from the ground they climb the nearest thing to shed their shells, but I was surprised to see one on a thorny thistle plant.

Cicada shells on Crepe Myrtle leaves

We have hundreds of the 13-year Cicadas this year. Their mating calls are loud and continuous. Very annoying, but it is only for a few weeks.

Have a great week-end!

I'm sure these cows thought Summer had arrived (I thought so, too), but this week's rain brought in cooler temperatures.  We've had to turn the heat back on at night.

Squirrels and Eagles, May 20, 2015

ABC Wednesday, Wild Bird Wednesday, and Signs Signs

ABC Wednesday
S is for Squirrel
City Park, Booneville, Mississippi, USA, May 14, 2015

Eastern Grey Squirrels are the most common squirrel in our area.

I don't know anyone who hunts squirrels now, but when I was a child (60 years ago) we ate squirrel and dumplings quite often during the Winter hunting season.

Wild Bird Wednesday
The Bald Eagle is not really bald.  Its scientific name means white-headed sea eagle.
Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, May 4, 2015

The area is fenced off to keep people from getting close enough to disturb the eagles.

The nest is high in a Pine tree, but with a zoom lens I was able to get a photo.  This young eagle was stretching its wings, practicing for flight.  It will be 3 or 4 years before it gets the white head feathers of an adult eagle.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, May 2015

Northeast Mississippi, USA, zone 7

Catalpa Tree: sometimes called Catawba.

Privet Hedge: tiny flowers with a sweet aroma, but highly invasive.

White Clover: loved by bees.

Clematis. I have forgotten the name of it.

A double white Clematis.

Dianthus: common name Sweet William.

I think the name of this Rose is Scentimental.

When I was a child, it was a tradition that on Mother's Day and Father's Day a person wore a red rose if the honored parent was alive and a white rose if he/she was dead.

The buds on this rose are pink, but they bloom out white.

Burr Rose, Rosa roxburghii. Notice the prickles (burrs) at the base of the bloom.

Pickwick Dam, May 13, 2015

ABC Wednesday, Water World Wednesday, Wild Bird Wednesday and Signs, Signs

ABC Wednesday
R is for River -  The Tennessee River flows 652 miles (1,049 km) through Tennessee and parts of Alabama and Kentucky to empty into the Ohio River.  Numerous dams along the way generate electric power and create lakes for fishermen and water sports enthusiasts to enjoy.

Water World Wednesday
Great Blue Heron, May 4, 2015

On the downriver side of Pickwick Dam, a Great Blue Heron prepares for takeoff.

And away he goes to catch his dinner.

Wild Bird Wednesday

On the electric power structure high above Pickwick Dam, an Osprey built a nest.  When I first saw the nest back in February, I thought it was an eagle's nest.  Now we know for sure - Osprey.

Osprey, Pandion haliaetus, May 4, 2015, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA

The National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds describes the Osprey as "a large, long-winged 'fish hawk.'  An Osprey searches for fish by flying and hovering over the water, watching the surface below.  When prey is sighted, it dives steeply, its talons outstretched, and splashes into the water."  Hopefully when it emerges it has a fish to eat!

Signs, Signs

Here are a few more signs from the Cancer Survivors camp that I went to in April.

The camp was at Fellowship Christian Retreat at Crow's Neck near Tishomingo, Mississippi.

Ground Hog - Treed! May 9, 2015

Our dog was barking down in the woods and would not come back to the house. We went to see what all the fuss was about.  She had a Ground Hog treed!

Prentiss county, Mississippi, May 7, 2015

According to Wikipedia, Ground Hogs, Marmota monax, are the largest rodents in the Squirrel family. They live in underground burrows, but can easily climb trees and are good swimmers.  We brought the dog back to the house and tied her to let the Ground Hog escape.  Looking at those claws and teeth, we did not want her getting into a fight with it.

Hope you have a wonderful week-end!

Tree Following, May 2015

Tree Following is a fun meme hosted by Lucy at Loose and Leafy.  To join in, select a tree and photograph it once a month. I am following a Pyrus calleryana, 'Bradford' Ornamental Pear that grows in my yard.

Prentiss county, Mississippi, USA

I'm not sure what year we set this tree out, but I would guess its age to be at least 20 years.  As you can see it has a pleasing conical shape and has grown very tall (about 25 feet or 8 meters).

The leaves are dark glossy green ovals with finely serrated edges.  On the underside, leaves are a lighter green, and the veins are more pronounced.

Last month's flowers are just a memory. In their place: tiny, hard fruit.  They will stay on the tree until Winter to provide food for the birds.

Have a wonderful day!

One Year in Remission, May 6, 2015

Water World Wednesday, Signs Signs, Wild Bird Wednesday, and ABC Wednesday

Water World Wednesday
Bay Springs Lake near Tishomingo, Mississippi, USA, April 25, 2015

Recently I attended a week-end camp for Cancer Survivors. The lake was only a few steps from our cabin.

Signs, Signs

There were wooden signs near the lake and along the walking paths. I saw perhaps 25 or 30. To mention just a few: 'Bread of Life,' 'Good Shepherd,'  'Redeemer,' 'Jesus,' and 'Prince of Peace.' Below is my favorite one.

I am celebrating! My Leukemia has been in remission for one year. Praise the Lord!
