A friend gave me some Canna Lily plants, and soon after I set them out, this toad came over to see what was new in the garden!

Wild Bird Wednesday and My Corner of the World

Brown Thrashers, Toxostoma rufum, may be found across the eastern half of North America from the Gulf of Mexico to southern Canada. They eat insects, worms, seeds, fruits, and occasionally, frogs and lizards.

Brown Thrashers are rather secretive birds, preferring to forage in the underbrush. I was surprised to see two of them out in an open grassy area.

The Waterway Grill mural pictures a tugboat (towboat) on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, a man-made canal between the Tennessee River and the Gulf of Mexico. (It needs a little repair work).

The Waterway Grill is no longer in business. I hope someone will buy it and open it as a restaurant again.

I like the fish welcome sign over the door!

No rain this week with high temperatures in the low 90sF (33C).
The birds on the water tank are Black Vultures.

2. Good Food!

At The Country Squire Restaurant: grilled chicken breast with grilled pineapple and a cherry, baked sweet potato with butter and brown sugar, toasted bread, and iced tea. The meal also included a green salad (lettuce, tomato, carrots, cucumber, etc.). It was delicious!

3. Coreopsis (Floral Friday Fotos)

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 23, 2019

Coreopsis is a genus of wildflower native to the Americas that contains about 75 to 80 species. I am not sure which one I have. Coreopsis blooms provide pollen and nectar for a wide range of bees and butterflies, and is loved by gardeners for its bright cheerful color.

I am thankful for Book Clubs! I am a member of two book clubs; one of them met at the library Tuesday night. We discussed "The Best Cook in the World" by Rick Bragg, and checked out next month's book, "Decider" by Dick Francis. Then several of us went out to eat together. It was a fun time!

T is for Tyrannus tyrannus - Eastern Kingbird

Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, May 7, 2019

The scientific name, Tyrannus, means tyrant, king, or despot, and refers to the Eastern Kingbird's aggressiveness towards other birds, especially during breeding and nesting season. They are migratory birds, spending the Summer months in the eastern three-quarters of North America, and flying away to South America when the weather begins to get cold here. They eat insects, fruit, and berries.

The Eastern Kingbird was searching for insects in a field of Butterweed.

Butterweed, Packera glabella, is a common Spring wildflower in the eastern United States.
(The fourth Wednesday of each month is Wildflower Wednesday).

The plants (knee-high or taller) prefer damp soil, have hollow stems, and form large bloom clusters.

1. Blue Sky (Sky Watch Friday)

Warm days with cool nights, blue skies, fluffy white clouds - perfect Spring weather!

2. Gardening

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 17, 2019

My tomatoes are growing taller, but so is the grass and the weeds!
That is a white Rose ('Iceberg') behind the second from right tomato plant. Most of the flowers are faded, but there are still more buds to open. And the purple on the far right is a wildflower, Spiderwort.

Only time will tell if this was a good idea or not - I planted cucumber seeds in with the tomato plants to let the cucumber vines climb the tomato cages.

And my okra is coming up. I see a few gaps; I will probably plant a few more seeds this weekend.

3. Bearded Iris (Floral Friday Fotos)

Bearded Iris gets its name from the Greek word for rainbow, and what a rainbow of colors there are!

I have only a few colors, but there are a lot of people who grow hundreds of different colors.

4. Snail (Saturday's Critters)

Large critters are easy to find and photograph, but don't overlook the small ones!

Though snails are kind of gross and slimy, I think their shells are pretty. One snail I can tolerate, but if they multiply and start eating my plants, I will not hesitate to declare war on snails!

5. Gray Catbird (I'd Rather B Birdin')

Gray Catbirds, Dumetella carolinensis, are migratory birds that spend the Winter along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of North America or in the Caribbean islands and Central America. But in the warm weather months they migrate across the United States and as far north as southern Canada to nest and raise their young.

S is for Spinus tristis - American Goldfinch, a small North American bird of the Finch family

Spinus tristis, the American Goldfinch, can be found over much of North America. It is a year-round resident in the midsection of the United States, but is seen in Canada only in the Summer, and in Mexico and the southwestern US only in the Winter. You can attract them to your yard with sunflower seeds.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day and My Corner of the World

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7

'Early Girl' Indeterminate Tomato

In the vegetable garden, the tomatoes are blooming!

And the Hedges are blooming! Very invasive plants. I am constantly cutting them back and mowing down the new sprouts, but when they bloom the aroma is heavenly!

Coreopsis growing near the Butterfly Bush

My Coreopsis plants have been in a race to see who blooms first. Here's the winner!

Kerria japonica 'Pleniflora'

White Floribunda Rose 'Iceberg' (bought in October 2017)

This rose has been blooming for two weeks, and is still going strong!

Burr Rose, Rosa roxburghii

This is a Burr Rose, so named because the buds look like burrs. Another name for it is Chestnut Rose.

I think this tiny wildflower is a member of the Bellflower family.

Another wildflower - Spiderwort

Trifolium repens

And White Clover! All mixed in with the grass, we will wait until it finishes blooming before we mow.

Rieger Begonia 'Solenia' Begonia x hiemalis

I do not have much luck with Begonias, but I could not resist this color.

And to add a bit of mystery, I bought two Geraniums from the 'mixed colors' shelf. Hopefully we will know what color they are by next Bloom Day.
