Willy Nilly Friday 5, June 30, 2017

1. Pickwick Lake (Sky Watch Friday)
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, June 25, 2017
Sunday was a beautiful day to be at Pickwick Lake. Our weather this month has been mostly sunny days, but with some rainy days that brought strong thunderstorms.

2. I could hardly believe my eyes...
Pickwick Lake, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA
...White Pelicans! In Tennessee!
I was very surprised to see them, but when I checked a few Internet sources, I found that White Pelicans have been seen on other large lakes in Tennessee. Now you know, you don't have to go all the way to the Gulf Coast to see Pelicans.

3. Recipe

Quick Fruit Tart

Pastry for a single crust pie
1/2 cup sugar
2 Tablespoons flour
3 cups fruit
Additional sugar (about a teaspoon)

Place pastry in a pie plate. Mix sugar and flour together, and stir into fruit. Place fruit mixture in center of pie crust. Bring the edges of the crust up and fold together, leaving center of the tart open. Sprinkle additional sugar on the tart (crust and fruit, too). Bake at 400℉ for 25 to 30 minutes. Serve warm or cold.

A friend gave me two cups of blackberries, and I had blueberries in the freezer. They were good together. If you want to make an apple or pear tart, cut the fruit into thin slices. You can add spices. For example, add cinnamon if you are making an apple tart.

4. Wildlife (Saturday's Critters and Camera Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 24, 2017
I looked out my dining room window last Saturday to discover a raccoon eating the sunflower seed we put on the ground for the doves!

It paused several times to look around in case our dog was near. The dog was asleep on the front porch the whole time the raccoon was in the back yard!

5. Cypress Vine (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi. USA, June 24, 2017
Cypress Vine, Ipomoea quamoclit, is a fast-growing tropical vine that readily reseeds itself. Its feathery leaves and small dainty flowers keeps it from being considered a nuisance plant. The most commonly seen color is red; I bought this white one at a Master Gardeners plant sale last year in Tupelo.

Have a wonderful week-end!

Split Rail Fence, June 29, 2017

Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, June 5, 2017
There are a lot of split-rail fences in Shiloh National Military Park.
For more information about Shiloh Click Here!

Eastern Kingbirds are migratory birds that spend the Winter months in South America, and return to North America during the Summer.

After posing on the fence for awhile, it flew up to a tree for a close-up portrait.

Wildflower Wednesday, June 28, 2017

The fourth Wednesday of each month is Wildflower Wednesday
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 24, 2017
Carolina Wild Petunia, Ruellia caroliniensis, is hardy in US zones 6 - 10 and may be found in shady or partly shady woodlands across the southeastern United States. It is a host plant for the Buckeye Butterfly Caterpillar.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 24, 2017
Each Carolina Wild Petunia bloom stays open only one day, but the plants produce a lot of blooms.

Happy Wildflower Wednesday!

Goldfinch, June 27-28, 2017

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
Y is for Yellow - the primary color of an American Goldfinch

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 19, 2017
American Goldfinches, Spinus tristis, are migratory birds whose range covers most of North America. During breeding season the males are bright yellow with black crowns, wings and tail; the females are a duller yellow.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 6, 2017
In the Winter their non-breeding plumage is a light yellow with brownish wings and tail.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 21, 2017
Goldfinches are strict vegetarians (seeds only). You can attract them to your yard by providing thistle seeds or sunflower seeds.

I hope you are having a wonderful day!

Harvest Monday, June 26, 2017

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 21, 2017
We are eating the last of the Spring Onions that I planted in March. I grew these large 'Fordhook' lima beans a few years ago. Even though they have been in the freezer for years, they were almost as good as fresh beans when I cooked them for lunch last Wednesday. Cantaloupe from a Farmer's Market and cornbread muffins completed the meal.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 23, 2017
This year I planted 'Improved Taylor' beans. I have blooms and tiny pods!

A friend gave me the seeds. I think they are a kind of pinto bean.

Happy Gardening!

Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday, and Floral Friday Fotos

1. Hurricane Cindy (Sky Watch Friday)
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, June 22, 2017
We have increasing cloudiness as a weakening Hurricane Cindy moves inland, but the main force of the storm is to the west of us. Today's forecast: a high temperature of 82F (28C) and an afternoon thunderstorm.

2. More Guitars
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, June 20, 2017
While I was in Tupelo on Tuesday, I photographed a few more of the Tribute to Elvis sculptures since people seemed to like the ones I posted last week.

You ain't nothing but... (a hound dog) ...Howling all the time

Blue Hawaii...Aloha from Tupelo

3. Something Hatched
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 21, 2017
From looking at photos on the Internet, I think it might be a Blue Jay, and I have seen Blue Jays at our bird feeders.

4. Who would have thought...
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 20, 2017
...that a rolled up water hose would be such a good back scratcher? Or perhaps she is giving herself a massage!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 21, 2017

Birds on a Fence, June 22, 2017

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, May 27, 2017
The best fences have birds on them!

They were all busy preening their feathers.

House Sparrows, I think.

Thankful Thursday
I am thankful that we live far enough inland that Hurricane Cindy will bring rain, but not the fierce wind that people on the Gulf Coast are experiencing. May God protect them.

I hope you are having a great day!

Eastern Phoebe, June 21, 2017

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 4, 2017
Eastern Phoebes, Sayornis phoebe, can be seen in the eastern half of the United States and in many provinces of Canada. Their winter range includes Mexico and the Central American countries. They are very vocal birds, and can be identified by their call: phoe-be, phoe-be, phoe-be. Another identifier is their habit of flicking their tails up and down.

Their major food sources are flying insects, but they also eat spiders, ticks, millipedes, seeds, and small fruit.

I hope you are having a wonderful week!

Chili's, June 20, 2017

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, June 19, 2017
For a limited time Chili's is running a lunch special for ten dollars: appetizer, entrée, and dessert (drinks not included and there is tax, of course, so it adds up to a few dollars more). My husband and I decided to try it yesterday, and the food was very good! I had a mixed green salad, BBQ ribs (Texas dry rub), French fries, chocolate cake, and iced tea. My husband chose the same meal, except he had chips and salsa as his appetizer instead of salad. We both thoroughly enjoyed it!

Have a great day!

Bread and Berries, June 19, 2017

Monday Mural and Harvest Monday

Monday Mural
Baldwyn, Mississippi, USA, June 8, 2017
The Bread Man cometh!

The delivery man took a hand-cart load of bread into the store and left the truck door open.
I wanted to go over there and shut the door so the mural would be complete, but I didn't dare!

Harvest Monday: Foraging for berries

Wild Blackberries may not be as large as the cultivated ones, but they are free food!
The birds and other animals scatter the seeds; rain and sunshine make them grow.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 15, 2017

This blackberry thicket is on our property. Please do not forage on another person's property without getting their permission first.

We enjoy adding them to our breakfast cereal. Sometimes we crush the berries with a fork, stir in a sprinkle of sugar, and spread the mixture on toasted bread. Yummy either way!

Have a great week!

Here they are two months later with their parents!

3. Guitars on Main Street
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA
The Elvis Presley Festival, held the first week-end in June in Tupelo, celebrates the music of Elvis Presley. There is lots of music, of course, but also a 5k run, arts and crafts, a pet parade, and tours of the Elvis birthplace.

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA
Two dozen (or more) metal sculptures, painted by school children, are permanent fixtures along Main Street.

4. Wildlife
